Re: Power Major plow day "touch-up"

The tires are completely shot, I thought about pulling a set off a tractors that will be painted as you suggested but all my runners are packed in the shed like sardines for the winter and hard to get ample working room around them. The set I did take off came from one in the "bone yard" as its come...

Re: Power Major plow day "touch-up"

Robert, Think I have to agree, some tractors should be kept original, there are so many that have been painted over the years that not many originals survive. Here in our area it was a common practice for this one particular Ford dealer to take an old Major and paint it like a NP 5000, :yikes: New p...

Power Major plow day "touch-up"

Every spring my father likes to take the original Power Major to a local plow day hosted by our neighbors,. Some years ago we swapped over the tires and rims from a NP 5000 Major and as you may know the rims are whitish in color, I believe Ford calls this light grey. This has for years now drove me ...

Re: Major "Live" Badge

Well I did manage to make it out to my "bone yard" and got a serial number of the tractor I suspected and turns out that it was built in 12-1957 as well. At least I won't lay in bed again wondering about it. :) But, I did have a sneaky suspicion that the one tucked in the back corner of the shed may...

Re: Major "Live" Badge

The badge color makes perfect sense, The blue would show up better on the silver grille and the red/orange on the blue. :D I went out and got the serial number from the one I know for sure is a New Major with "Live Drive" 1455519 and it shows as being built 12-57. This was my uncles tractor and the ...

Re: Major "Live" Badge

Hi Robert, I have two late New Majors with "Live Drive" but they also have the blue badge. I know this topic might make no difference to some but It has made me curious for a while now. All the aftermarket "Live" badges I seen have been blue. I am siding with you, the red letter badge must have been...

Re: Major "Live" Badge

Yes, I know the grille colors are controversial to say the least, I prefer the factory original colors myself but if he or she likes them purple, pink, green, etc that's OK too, as long as its on there tractor and not one of mine. :D I am most interested about when they changed to the blue 'Live" ba...

Re: St Mary's show, Bear Creek

Well that gives me plenty of time to locate someone to look after chores for a day, Do they let anyone exhibit tractors or do you have to be a club member ? We have some Sheppard Diesels that I would like to get out this summer and play with a bit, maybe bring a pair of them down if its OK. :D

Major "Live" Badge

I was having a good root about the workshop and I ran into my stash of Major grille screens, as I looked at the "Live" badges it once again had me wondering, when did Fordson make the change to the blue badge ? This question has puzzled me for some time. :scratchhead: http://i40.photobucket.com/albu...

Ben, The solenoid would not break the circuit as you said and the starter motor continues to run, a rite good way to burn one up for sure. :(

Re: Where to buy new solenoid?

Simon,

I have to agree with Dave, :yeah: Please do not mess about with that solenoid. It has clearly been hot and could cause a short. Much better to not risk it and get a new one. Any "simple" solenoid should do, check with your local auto parts suppler. :D

Re: Dumb newby battery charging question

Hello Simon, I sure looks like you are dealing with an open type battery there to me. In a perfect word you should just need a large flat screwdriver to open it up. I have adopted the Epsom salt and distilled water method when topping battery's, seems to work the best for me. 3 table spoons Epsom sa...

Re: rusty turns over but wont run

No, you should not fill it with oil but rather lubricate all the working bits. I found that it is a good practice on the pneumatic injection pumps. I don't know if other Fordson owners observe this same practice but we were advised of this by our local Ford dealer many, many years ago.

Re: Starter return spring

Oh yes, it always starts with just one, LOL. The first Major came into our lives in 1956 and it was "love at first sight" for this family, that tractor was traded in on the 1960 Power Major you may have seen in my other posts. I have had made it my goal to find our first Major so anytime one comes u...

Re: Starter return spring

I know so well about the over budget thing myself, I always find that I spend way more on a restoration that expected. I too also prefer to use all the original parts if possible, not just to take the cheap way out but just for authenticity. I also like to keep it just as it left the factory not add...

Re: rusty turns over but wont run

I have taken the injection pumps apart before and reassembled them with a good success rate but it is not for the faint hearted, they are best left to a professional that deals in fuel systems. If your not careful and you open it up parts may go sailing all over the workshop and you could end up lik...
