Re: Pictures from Australia
One of the farmers here has two of those, with cabs. He's had them for 30 years that I know of, probably longer. They still bale hay. He doesn't use them as much now, because he mostly puts up one ton bales. He has a lot of hay ground and he used to do custom haying, too, so he's put lots of bales t...

Re: Uneven run, low revs, white smoke
There really aren't any repairs, to the injector pump, that you can do yourself. The kit that you have is probably for the lift pump.
I would also check for water in the tank and the filter and make sure that the air cleaner is not blocked. Also check the screen on the valve in the fuel tank.

Re: 4D Engine identification
Hi Ed Welcome to Fordson Tractor Pages. It looks like you have a marinised version of a Mark 1 Fordson Major engine. If you look on the left side of the block, about 3 inches below the front exhaust port, you will find a casting code. If you post that, we can tell you when your engine was made. The ...

Re: 1962 Super Major Hydraulic Oil and Gearbox Oil
You won't hurt your tractor if you run it with those seals leaking, as long as you check the oil level in the transmission and keep it full. You can use a pump to transfer the oil, like Adrian said, or you can use a hose on your hydraulic remotes to do it. To flush the rear end and transmission, use...

Re: Clouds of White Smoke
Your engine number, 1396259 was made in July 1956. That is the correct injection pump and the timing should be 26 degrees. The Mk 2 engine with the stamped steel head gasket was timed at 19 degrees. The gasket had a high failure rate and was discontinued, so no Majors are timed at 19 degrees. I'm no...

Welcome to Fordson Tractor Pages, highangle. That's a pretty nice Super Dexta. It needs a little work, but there's a lot there to work with.

Re: dual to single batteries
Welcome to Fordson Tractor Pages, bjbjl6. Your Dexta was originally 12 volts, positive ground. I can't think of a reason that anyone would have changed it to 6 volts. I don't think that you could start it with 6 volts, especially in the winter. Check to see if it still has the original generator, or...

The cord thickness is 3/32" for the top one and 3/16" for the bottom. I don't know the diameter, though.Broadspeed wrote:Can someone tell the correct sizes for the o-rings?

Re: PTO
I haven't had to work on that part of my Dexta, but the manual shows a ball and spring that keeps the lever in the engaged position. If that's not the problem, the gear teeth could be worn from a previous owner engaging the PTO before the gears stopped turning.

Re: Super Major -62 (engine rebuild)
I also found good used camshaft, but its fitted with three bolts. In my Major its fitted with one bolt.. Can I fit this three bolt cam if I change also the gearwheels :?: No. It won't work. That cam was designed to use the older narrow timing gears. It had a thrust washer. Yours doesn't. Your front...

Re: Super Major Engine rebuild
The mk. 1 engines used a 1.25" pin. The later ones use 1.375" pins. Maybe they sent you bushings for the early pins.

Re: Super Major Engine rebuild
You must have accidentally posted a page from an older manual, Adrian. That looks like the old, non-spigoted sleeves. The newer ones are measured from the lower step, like this. http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/6832/majorlinerprotrusion.jpg You need to measure them before you install the o-rings. If...

Take off the injector pump, take the coupler off of the shaft, remove the tach drive gear, take the timing cover and gear off, then tap it out the front with a hammer and drift.

Yep. That's what I was thinking.
Brian said they used to test them by trying to pump kerosene with them while turning them by hand.

I would use the composition one. I haven't had any problems with the after-market ones, but the the majority opinion here, is to use a genuine New Holland one.

Where did you buy your new oil pump? I always like to use a new oil pump when I rebuild an engine, but I wonder which is better, a 50 year old Fordson or a brand-new one made in India?

That should work, if you transfer your measurements to something flexible that you can wrap around the circumference of the pulley.

One thing that I forgot to mention. If you're looking at the engine from the back (flywheel end) the numbers get bigger as you go counter clockwise.

Re: Major Compression Specifications
You're probably right about 98 percent, Pavel. When I said that its probably less than that, I meant that the intake valve is probably open for a smaller part of the compression stroke. Even if you know how far up the piston is when the intake closes, you would still need to know the combustion cham...

The extra terminal is most likely a ground. Make a jumper wire to go between that terminal and one of the mounting bolts.

Re: Timing - no flywheel marks, no pulley notch, no pointer
The dead stop just has to be something that goes into the injector hole to stop the piston close to top dead center. Pat used a bolt, spring and plate, with some washers to adjust the point where the piston stops. Roll the engine over ( very slowly, you don't want to damage the piston) until it stop...
