New Performance Major Rev Counter
One item that I never managed to complete satisfactorily on the rebuild of my July 1963 NP Super Major (about 6 years ago) was the rev counter. In the collection of bits that I started with was an old AC rev counter. I sent this away to one of the available companies to be reconditioned and it was s...

Re: FM Side Engine Rail
Dear icom102 Woh, that's not good! There should be 4 bolts, hex head 1/2inch UNC by 1 and 3/8in long at the transmission end securing your rails. If you are lucky, try running a 1/2 inch UNC tap into the transmission mountings to clean them up. If the threads are stripped, you may be able to put in ...

Re: Steering wheel nut
Dear Paumass
Steering wheel retaining nut, according to my parts list is "5/8 inch UNF Blind Nut". Sorry I couldn't reply sooner, I was in France, without my Fordson Major Parts List (a heinous crime, I know!!)
Regards

Re: Super Major Brakes
Good Day Supermajor61
To partly answer your question about what other tractors had these type of brakes, International Harvester fitted these dry, multi-plate type brake discs to their B414, B434 etc range of tractors.

Re: hylomar
Blue hylomar is pretty good stuff (used by the Army repair organisation), although I would only use it for that extra security with paper, or cork gaskets. Wellseal can also do the job, although it appears to be too "thin" for me and is what we used when old repair manuals called for shellac to be a...

Re: Power Major Air Cleaner
Gosh, some excellent investigation there. It is certainly a really tangled web, concerning something as simple as an oil bath air cleaner. Perhaps the only complete solution is original production drawings to explain the differences and interchangeability between the various types of cleaner and the...

Re: Power Major Air Cleaner
Dear Halloween Regarding your last question on whether there is a specific type you need to order, I originally thought not, as all the ones I have come across (diesel tractors) have appeared the same. However, the parts list shows 2 different types (for petrol and diesel engines) and some other var...

Re: FM Steering Box Bolts
I am probably wrong, but I thought the breather bolt was one of the four bolts that hold the fuel tank support brackets to the transmission housing, rather than the steering box.

Re: FM Steering Box Bolts
Dear icom 102
According to my parts list, they are 1/2 in UNC x 1 and 7/16 in long "special hex head bolts". I don't know what is "special" about them!

Re: Power Major Air Cleaner
Dear Halloween 1. There should be no hole in the air cleaner bath. It should contain engine oil up to the level of a "pressed" line running around the bowl near the top end. 2. The "gauze wire" element is removable for cleaning, although it sounds as if yours may be well rusted in through lack of th...

Re: Hydraulic oil filter
That's what it says in Section 6 of my Super Major Supplement Manual "Unscrew the back pressure valve from the exhaust oil pipe". I cannot recall it being stupidly tight when I did it on my NP Super Major...Good luck.

Re: Drag link removal
Don't hit the taper pins, even with the nuts on, they seldom come out with this line of attack. Hit the arm that surrounds the pin at right angles to the pin. ie hit towards where the arm pivots. The shock of the blow goes through the material and meets the taper of the pin at an angle which forces ...

Re: FPM Tach drive ratio??
Good Day I don't know the ratio, only that it is driven by a gear off the auxillary shaft. The auxillary shaft obviously revolves at half engine speed. I think the oil pump drive comes off the same gear. Presumably need to count the driving teeth on the Aux Shaft and the driven teeth on the Tachomet...
