With that cab I'd suggest it may have been imported.
The 'suicide' door arrangement is now almost standard across most manufacturers and is in a lot of respects better than the forward opening variety. Also makes for a cleaner entry/exit as the door keeps you distanced from the rear wheel.

Re: Choosing and finding a Fordson Major
Telling Wifey I've bought another tractor always gets me a good belt!
I have clear memory of a very early 4000 (wrap around grille, D suffix reg I think) with a 'MAJOR' decal on each bonnet cheek.

Re: Choosing and finding a Fordson Major
The 3000 is the successor to the Super Dexta. 3cyl engine, 4x2 transmission, live drive pto, position and draft control hydraulics, top link sensing, etc. The other one you show there is on turf tyres, good for low ground pressure, not so good for hauling. The rear wheel rims look to be much later t...

Not a Major, but would do all you want and not far away.

Re: Choosing and finding a Fordson Major
I reckon two 12 hour shifts should do it. A couple of sunny days out taking all the back roads up over the Pennines. Nice little adventure to mark the beginning of Major ownership.

Re: Choosing and finding a Fordson Major
Looks nice, good tinwork, fair tyres, decent roll bar on it, air cleaner mushroom missing. Looks like an alternator fitted as well as a different starter. Could be nothing, but there appears to be a lot of oil around the exhaust joint and spots on the blue paint at the back as though it's being blow...

"That's actually the breather pipe to the air filter, and it fits on with rubbers, they often get cracked and leak, Dunlop Tractor Spares had new ones."
Doh! I can see it is now. Why I couldn't identify that earlier I have no idea.

Re: Choosing and finding a Fordson Major
The thumbs thing still stands - don't do it! I think a Major is probably worse for kicking as it's heavier and delivers more force back through the linkage.
Power assisted is available to fit. Certainly not standard on earlier models.

Re: some oil leaks
I'd have thought a fibre washer would be better on the valve chest. The pipe to tank leak looks like there's been some force on it by the way the paint is off all around the joint. A bit of brazing on both joints could be all it needs. If that was an old Land Rover you'd be over the moon with that n...

Re: Choosing and finding a Fordson Major
Hi, welcome along. The 990 is a nice machine but from memory it has a four range transmission, and at least 3, if not 4 different hydraulic modes/settings. If you have the need for it all it's great but it's a lot to sort out if it goes wrong and I wouldn't know what the spares availability is like....

Re: 4600 piston question
Nice one!
I was aware of the bore difference in some but I just could not find any reference to a stroke issue which is what this clearly is.
It's a friends machine and I've not been back to it recently but when I do I'll let you know how we get on.
Thanks.

Re: 4600 piston question
Thanks John. We'll have to take one out and give it a measure from crown to wrist pin and see where we go next. Crank and con rods are original so it can only be the pistons somehow.

4600 piston question
In the process of rebuilding a 4600 engine and the new pistons won't fit. Ok, take it as read that we got the wrong ones. Question is, they fit the bore perfectly, but at TDC the crown is 2+ mm above the block face so what would they be for? I believe the difference between a 41 and 46 engine is the...

Re: Starting an engine
Did you get a spark when you connected the heater plugs? If not there's a good chance they're not working. From memory these engines are not good starters from cold without plenty of glow plug action (20 secs at least). +1 on Johns blowlamp suggestion. Don't mix heater plugs or blowlamp with easysta...

From memory, your wall is a very good match to the wall around County's machine shop! The floor though was concrete and not brick pavers - you'll have to work on that.

Re: 1954 FMD - Injector pump not pumping
Just an observation re diesel quality. Back in the 1970s/80s a diesel car would have an oily stain under the filler. My VW is a pain to fill and regularly gets drips down the paint, yet by the time I get home the spill has gone. Noticeably in the last few weeks the supply has obviously been changed ...

Re: Use of Red Diesel After 1 April 2022
I'll try and find the article, It went something along the lines of 'At 40 years the vehicle is automatically changed to historic, and as such cannot use rebated fuel as it is no longer agri'. I've been through so much info (right and wrong) on this subject it could take a while. Unfortunately from ...

Re: Use of Red Diesel After 1 April 2022
Two questions spring to mind.
Who's going to be the first to start whining when farmers can't/refuse help the council with snow clearing?
If your tractor is registered on a 'Q' plate it can't be taxed historic as it has no date of manufacture on the v5 so it would have to stay ag and run on red?

Hi Sandy, slightly off topic, what type of rear tyre is that? We used to have semi industrial rears on our diggers with a 'J' lug on them but I've not seen a 'T' lug like that before.

Re: 10 series column change gearbox
That's interesting, it would explain the flat/round lever thing although I'm sure the shift pattern was different. The 710s were no better. Same 'box but this time a floor shift. Range lever was shorter than the gear lever as was traditional but with reverse on it you could never find it quickly. We...
