Re: Reason for oil leaking from oil bath of air cleaner?
RH, encountered similar problems with majors when driving them for a living. Can be difficult to get the rim of the bowl to mate up with the base of the cleaner. Sometimes better to move the fastening ring out of the way, drop it down a little, and the ensure that the bowl and cleaner body are prope...

Re: fordson Super Major starting issues
When you ran out of fuel all the dirt in the fuel tank would have been sucked onto the in-tank gauze/filter slowing the flow of fuel. A quick way to clear the filter is as follows: Turn the tap under the fuel tank off and disconnect the fuel pipe. Take a bicycle air pump and flexible connector. Shor...

Re: IH B23 Finger Bar Mower
With respect to Black Bob's comment "Not wishing to sound cavalier about health & safety, but the pto shaft is possibly the least dangerous part of a mower anyway". I must strongly disagree. Various bits of a mower will cut or crush fingers or legs. PTO shafts, just catching on a trouser leg, sleeve...

Check the exhaust position. Some were positioned outside the bonnet, others had holes in bonnet for pipe (Loader fitted)

Re: which plough
Chriss, unless you are a ploughman, I would avoid a reversible for 'fun ploughing'. They take a lot of setting up and are difficult to work with when worn. Also plenty heavy enough for your tractor, front will be very light when on the road and any steering problems exaggerated. But if you do buy it...

Re: running a major in cold weather
In very cold weather in the UK, 1963?, I blocked the bottom 1/3 of the radiator with cardboard. Cut the cardboard to fit, take out the chaff screens and put the cardboard in when the engine is running. The airflow will pull it close to the radiator. Watch the temperature if the engine is working hard.

Re: New Member and stalled Fordson Major
I guess that the filter in the fuel tank is getting blocked. Once some dirt is caught in the filter the remaining clear spaces are quickly blocked and you get fuel starvation. When the engine is stopped some dirt will fall away from the filter, only for it to block up again when the engine runs agai...

Re: Injector pump rack keeps closing
I had a similar problem and as a temporary cure held the stop lever on the pump open with an external spring. Not that strong that the stop control wouldn't work.
Not ideal but kept the tractor going until I had more time.

Make absolutely sure that water is not getting into the cylinders. Symptoms , grey oil and/or loss of coolant. If that is not the problem hitch it up to the toughest implement you have and work it as hard as possible for at least 3 hours. I don't mean just pulling a trailer, try a plough or somethin...

Re: Attaching FR PM plough points
I always used wooden pegs on trailed ploughs (Cut a piece of the right diameter from a hedge). As trailed ploughs couldn't be reversed the points stayed on. I used spare bolts or thick bent nails on hydraulic lift ploughs as they could be reversed in work, usually by accident. If so the wooden pegs ...

A really good event. (Helped by the perfect weather).
A wide range of really good exhibits, displays and stalls. Excellent food and drink facilities and easily accessed, very clean, toilets.
Well set out on an easily accessible site.
Congratulations and thanks to the organisers and exhibitors.

Wullie, the attachment points to the tractor linkage are all almost identical and that is what identifies them as Ferguson.
I agree with Brian's comments about Ferguson ploughs. I couldn't make a good job with a Ferguson plough coupled to a Ferguson tractor yet alone a Dexta.

Re: Ransomes trailed mole plough - size & weight
Porteous I've mole drained many acres using a 100hp crawler tractor. A Triple D, (effectively 2 super Majors) wouldn't pull it - too much wheel spin. Your tractor would be fine pulling it if you keep the machine out of the ground! I think the trailer width might be an issue. I guess it will fit but ...

Re: EPIC mouldboard confusion
When a plough is properly set the landslide should just leave a mark on the bottom of the furrow. If the plough is tilted too far forwards the end of the landslide won't be touching the furrow bottom and if it leaves too much of a mark the plough is tilted too far backwards and it will be difficult ...

Re: Uneven run, low revs, white smoke
Chris I think your problem is the pipe. Why not see if a car/motor engineer can make one for you. They might have a kit to flare open the pipe ends and a selection of fittings. If you are making up a new pipe get the angles right. If you try and bend it yourself you will probable kink it and leave i...

Re: Uneven run, low revs, white smoke
Chris if the revs pick up when you pump the hand pump you must have a fuel shortage caused by a blockage. Have you taken out/cleaned the outlet filter in the tank. Accessed by unscrewing the tap. A lazy but effective check is to take off the pipe where it exits the tap and blow some air up it. I use...

Porteous,
I didn't even notice the smoke!
Can remember in 1953? that under slung exhausts were replaced because, with a following wind, the exhaust gases made the drivers feel ill.
I was just a nine year old at the time, riding on the tractor and learning the trade.

Eric is correct.
Never pull from above the mid axle height on any tractor. Last week saw someone with a chain attached to the top link bracket on a Power Major.A fatal accident waiting to happen.
