Re: Majors still earning their keep haymaking

Thanks for the comments glad the pictures are interesting. I have 2 New Holland 268 super hayliner balers which pull cooks flat 8 sledges. This year a lot of the hay was pretty dusty so everything had a good coating of dust. If I get a chance I'll upload a picture I took where we have to run the mac...

Majors still earning their keep haymaking

Thought I'd upload a couple of shots of 2 of the fleet still hard at it. Blue one had a replacement engine this winter courtesy of a late blue/orange super major, red one was a new addition to the fleet this spring and has proved to be a good all round machine needing a good service and I swapped ou...

Roadless 75 haymaking

After a request for a photo of the Roadless 75 I thought I'd upload a couple of it in action this year haymaking, I didn't get any of it on the baler unfortunately but it did most of the mowing and shared tedding duties with some of the majors. One field in particular was pretty steep and we were gl...

Ford 5000 aux valve with assister ram question

As per title, I have an assister ram fitted but the take off point is on top of the flat plate where you can bolt on an auxilliary spool valve. My question is, if I want to fit a double acting spool valve where can I get a take off point for the assister ram?
There must be a way of fitting both?

Used pulleys are hard to find without scoring on the oil seal face (where it goes through timing cover), something to look out for if buying "unseen" over the internet etc

Re: Ford 5000 / Roadless 75 hydraulic lift query

Brian, thanks for the input, I have established that pulling out AS control stops it dropping with engine switched off. What are my options from here, is there anything external that can be looked at before ripping off the hyd lid or is it all buried? Is it likely to be a duff O ring somewhere? Its ...

Re: Major 4 WD

Another vote for Selene rather than Roadless. As well as front axles the gearboxes nearly always have issues due to the extra torque reacted through both driven axles (on a 2wd you generate more wheelslip and hence less torque applied through transmission). In the UK Roadless models seem to be a lot...

Re: What model is my tractor?

I'm not sure that it isn't based on a diesel major, the clocks are under the fuel tank as is throttle control. Also the butlers headlamp has a curved glass rather than flat, again signs of it being an earlier model. Without looking at casting codes thats as good a guess as you can get! given the eng...

Ford 5000 / Roadless 75 hydraulic lift query

I have recently "modernised" the fleet with a 1970's Roadless 75 (based on a 5000) and not being familiar with this range of Fords I have got a query regarding the hydraulics having started to use it in anger. When I pick up an implement and set the height using position control it seems to hunt up ...

Re: Oil Pressure

Worth a try, one of my supers had this symptom last summer you might find once the temperatures get warmer (if summer arrives) and you give it any serious work that you get a knocking in the bottom end. With oil pressure off the bottom of the clock its only a matter of time since under any kind of l...

Re: Oil Pressure

When you say low, how low? I think a good engine should run at around 40psi hot (I have a genuine ford recon unit that was stored since the 60's which runs at 40psi all day long) On the other hand I have several which run at around 15 - 20 psi hot and have given no problems. I say this but with one ...

If you check out www.cheffins.co.uk website you will see all the results posted from the sale. Not all the tractors sold, it looks like the Roadless 6/4 went back home.

Re: tyre sizes on a selene major

To disengage 4WD on a roadless you sometimes need to select reverse and back up a short way whilst applying pressure to the 4WD lever. It is advantageous for 4Wd tractors to have a slightly faster front axle speed in terms of efficiency for cultivation work I believe.

Re: tyre sizes on a selene major

Sorry that info is for Roadless conversions on Majors but there is a fair chance the Selene will be the same. Also worth checking you have the correct rear diff to match front axle since later supers had 2 rear axle ratios available, depends if your conversion is original or made up from a different...

Re: tyre sizes on a selene major

Fronts 9.5 x 24 with either 12.4/11 x 36 or 14/16.9 x 30 on the rear. From memory the 38" rims had 12.4 x 24 on the front. Later 1000nd series Roadless conversions had a few variations.

Re: ebay.uk

a lot of these were at the Cheffins vintage sale at Sutton on Saturday. The Roadless 6/4 made around £15k, a Roadless Power Major with single speed Boughton winch made around £5.5k and a late Roadless blue/grey Super Major with pick up hitch made around £7k (all prices plus commission). All were run...

Re: P.U.H draw bar ?!

I think these adapters were made by Lawrence Edwards to allow standard drawbar trailers to be used. They are pretty uncommon, as are the pick-up hitches themselves, particularly the later type (which yours appears to be from what I can see). Yours adapter looks to have been modified slightly. I have...

Re: Super major live drive

Ive got a NP Roadless which is dead drive and a late blue/orange Roadless which is live so there are both types found in the Roadless conversions. I have to say that I have seen mainly dead drive clutches in the Roadless tractors, I imagine this was to try and offset some of the cost. These would ha...

Re: fordson super major project

Live drive was an option up to '64, you see a few in linconlnshire/cambs quite late but non live since they were mainly ploughing/cultivating I suppose. The super that made around 12k a few years back at cheffins sale was non live drive I seem to recall. You may need to look at your injection pump o...

Re: Fordson axle A frame

Yes because I have just done the opposite, getting the A frame off is the worst bit but you have to since the hole in the axle casting is also bigger on a super major. The bolts down through the axle will need some heat to get them out and even then expect to need new bolts! You could swap an axle a...
