Re: Recovering old batteries

That was the sort of stuff I was thinking of for them, but we need to do it when we're not doing much and it's not too hot (as it is now). Billy has many more leaks but only one is serious (pedal cross shaft on both sides, it just pours out) and we're pretty close to being able to fix it.

1962 petrol Dexta, the numbers from the transmission and case are part numbers, there are casting codes everywhere.

Re: Recovering old batteries

Yes they are, but not much and only after running. We might do something about it, but it's not alarming, it helps to keep him clean with those rags but not much more.

Rare (I think) battery clamp

Here's some pics of Billy's battery clamp, the one used until 1956. It has had new plate added as a result of corrosion from batteries spilling electrolyte. As a result of this, the clamp will be coming off soon to get some paint on it (pics coming soon). https://i.postimg.cc/MHgTmvvY/DSCF0494.jpg h...

Re: Recovering old batteries

Here's the battery in, with the rare (I think, this is the only one I know of except another one which we also have for Super Billy) battery clamp tightened down. One of the rods is lost but I think it's here hiding somewhere. The battery is performing very well considering its age (25+ years old). ...

Re: Super major diff locked on.

The reason for this nut coming off is as mysterious as Billy's oil pipe support coming off and a diff pinion breaking up, causing the same effect as a diff lock. Ensure everything is strictly clean before reassembly.

Re: Recovering old batteries

the old one survived about seven consecutive start attempts, each lasting about 0.5 seconds and it kept its voltage! I think Billy's long awaited new battery is an old one he used over 25 years ago! The old battery is on and works 25+ years later! It has been on the charger for much longer than int...

Re: Narrow Dexta badge

No, the Super Dexta ones would be in place of the restyled Dexta badges (Davie is a Narrow Dexta), between the bonnet handles and above the level of the prop. These holes on Davie are only on the LH side and next to the battery.

Re: 60 farm fordson major diesel

Definitely clean the fuel tank, it's not at all easy but totally necessary if you want you fuel filters to survive the full 600 hours they're meant to, you shouldn't find anything else than bare metal in there once it's clean. Use ordinary diesel. I would change it but if you warm the old oil up it ...

Re: 60 farm fordson major diesel

The dynamos up to 1962 were Lucas C39 variants, with screw terminals, from 1962 they used the C40 variants, with spade terminals and a higher output. So you need a C39 with screw terminals, if you can find one sold as a Fordson one you'll ensure it's the right kind. If you need them I'll get pics of...

Narrow Dexta badge

After looking around for other Narrow Dexta's, I saw some with a badge saying N arrow either on the LH grill middle or the LH side of the bonnet. Davie has holes on the LH side of the bonnet 2 1/4" apart and 3/16" in diameter at about the level of the bonnet handles just next to the battery. Do you ...

Re: 60 farm fordson major diesel

The extra filter I think sits between the tank and lift pump, from there on it's the std. arrangement. The dynamo is a Lucas C39 type, but if you look for Fordson dynamo you should find a suitable one. The fan was 17" in diameter, if you're in a hot area I recommend a four bladed one (two two bladed...

Re: 60 farm fordson major diesel

If the 54 key works that's very good as there are several. The box for the regulator is to keep it clean, the later sealed one is left in the open dirt. It mounts on that projection on the back of the air filter. I don't know that type of pre cleaner, looks pretty good but I don't know how it's mean...

Re: 60 farm fordson major diesel

Dave's air filter is in bits, so no worries about that. The Farm Major wiring is the same as the Power Major, in Dave's case the type with the early regulator (the same as used in the early days), and the point about it being different is that Dave doesn't have the original lever operated starter. S...

Re: 60 farm fordson major diesel

Some nice pics there. The head casting code is F27C (27 May 1959) with the pattern screw between the 2 and the 7. It is indeed a core plug that is needed on the Tachometer drive unit, the tachometer cable you need is part no. E1ADDN-17365B. I don't think you can get a separate key, ask the previous ...

Having looked at more things it seems Farm Major's did have dual fuel filters, but I don't think they would be like that (not too sure about this).

I have looked very hard and can't find any other engine that has powered so much, as about the only two things it hasn't done are cars and aircraft, but almost all other imaginable industrial road or agricultural machine has it's Major based version!

I only discovered this a few weeks ago when I found this page full of odd Major uses. This converted 400E shows that there was a Major powered van as well as a lorry.
