Re: Super Major Doe Triple d Picture

Just because it's correct doesn't make it right ;) I actually like the later blue / grey liveried Ford skid unit Does better than the earlier Major derived versions, something in the angular tinwork and the colours just gelled. Saw a video yesterday with some Australians who had built a Case based c...

Re: Power steering ram

Hi Tom

Photo's of what you have would help, both the tractor and ram (and pump as well)

An idea of where you are located might help with suggestions for possible suppliers

Cheers

Re: Oil out of timing cover breather

Before that, make sure the rocker box breather pipe into the air filter is completely clear and you have no leaks in the air intake pipe / cleaner, mine started putting oily sludge out at the crankcase breather and I was amazed at how effective cleaning out the blocked pipe was - that little bit of ...

Re: Testing and repairing hydraulic pump

Any sign of wear or movement in the linkage from the big external arm moving with respect to the crosspin or the little arm inside the housing which moves the link which in turn moves the valve piston ??

You don't half come up with some odd ones :scratchhead:

Re: 3pt hitch wont drop

Weld a bolt or bit of square bar to the broken end, the weld will not stick badly to the casting and the heat will help release the rust, I'd not fast cool the weld in case it makes it brittle and snaps. A bolt with 2 or 3 longways grind or file grooves makes a reasonable substitute tap for cleaning...

Re: forson super major - OIL COMING OUT AT EXHAUST MANIFOLD

Replacing the thermostat with a hotter range one may help, removing the thermostat will make the engine run at its most cool but it is the hard work which helps this problem by working the bores and rings to give the best sealing (if it is oil accumulating on the cylinder walls) Are you getting heav...

As Henk Said :( Where in the world are you ? if UK (Wales by the name ??), PM me the diameter of glass you need as I have a few from different pumps, I'f I've one which is likely to fit I'll happily pop it in the post for you - can't do much about the injection pump but this might save the cost of a...

Re: Tyre changing issues

Have had the same problem, a twisted / tufted wire brush on the angle grinder took care of it, I have a blunted corner rounded brickies bolster chisel which in conjunction with some shallow angled heart oak wedges which I used for awkward beads, spreads the load on the rim so if you have a soft one ...

Take care with your tyre irons, some of the later rims are as soft as butter and will dinge and bend badly if you are unfortunate enough to have one, plenty of soap helps.........

Re: Diesel Major rear brake shoe fitting

I think Timee means the radial position of the friction material on the shoe, there is usually a leading and trailing edge difference which decides if it is a left or right hand top or bottom shoe, I'm watching with interest as I've just got a new set of friction material to rivet on the old shoes a...

Re: Hydraulics bobbing when anything of 3 pt lift

Any supplier of ball race bearings ought to be able to supply single balls to a specified size, although a minimum order charge may not make that cheap :( Not sure if any of the tractor supplies people do them but it might be worth contacting your local New Holland tractor dealer as they claim to be...

Re: Hydraulics bobbing when anything of 3 pt lift

Reference the non return valve, after a while the oil becomes abrasive with the much and rust it accumulates (you may have just corrected this in the pump!) so may account for the ball and seat wearing, there is also 60 years of hammering as the ball seats to consider, while hardened the 'rivetting'...

Re: crankshaft timing gear

Some heat from a propane torch on the gear boss may help by expanding it slightly - the heat from the engine over the years gradually converts the oil film to a very effective glue. Put a bolt in the thread at the end of the crankshaft and push against that, drilling a small dimple in the bolt head ...

Re: Testing and repairing hydraulic pump

Hi, I think you may still be missing my point, the 150bar dead headed reading being the confusing point because of the similarity with the PRV limited system pressure. Perhaps an electrical analogy might help. You have a battery showing 150 volts when not connected to anything but the meter. Connect...

Re: Testing and repairing hydraulic pump

OK, thanks for the confirmation, things tend to get lost between postings and this one is not proving easy to diagnose ;( My point is that when new the pump should support more than the 350 bar at a flow rate of 5 gallons per minute (the manual does not specify at what revs and 2200 psi is 149 bar),...

Re: Testing and repairing hydraulic pump

Summarising so far You have cleaned and checked the pump intake so there is no probability of being starved of oil You have had movement of the arms (without loading) so there is no mechanical problem like seizure in the ram or linkage With the pump output dead headed by the test gauge you develop o...

Re: Testing and repairing hydraulic pump

I've had a closer look at your test set up for the pump pressure, have you bolted a plate on so you can have a tapping for your test gauge pipe ? if this is the case then the block which the pressure relief valve is fitted is missing, in which case and by coincidence your maximum pressure developed ...

Re: Testing and repairing hydraulic pump

Glad you noticed that Svend  - I was reading psi not BAR - looks like the PRV is doing it's job then, must be the lift valve, the ram or something blocked in between.

Re: Testing and repairing hydraulic pump

It will develop system pressure when the ram reaches the end of its travel Svend - that is the main purpose of the PRV, to shed the excess oil, limiting the maximum pressure the pump and its seals see. what I do not know is a method of testing the PRV other than by fitting another one :scratchhead:

Re: Testing and repairing hydraulic pump

Is the pressure varying with the engine speed ? i.e. when you rev up do you get more pressure ?? if not I would suspect the pressure relief valve as more revs to the pump should result in more pressure as the oil flow should increase in greater proportion to leakage in the pump mechanism whereas a f...
