Re: Steering box

I was toying with the idea of fitting a grease nipple and just fill the whole thing with grease as access to the plug is not easy, but a niggle in the back of my head says if it would work it would have been done before? :scratchhead: Dave

Re: Steering box

Thanks Mathias, yours looks the same as mine did, I`ll have to get the box off again and take more care , I must have missed something the last time. Probably rushed it to get back in to work. I have plenty of time now with the Coronavirus restictions, all my work has dried up and we just have to ma...

Re: Steering box

Hi Mathias, The second hand route is tempting especially bearing in mind the time saved fitting it, but its how to decide if I`m buying a good one or not. Some that are up for sale are nearly as expensive as renewing my own, and of a couple of used ones I enquired about one had no guarantee at all a...

Steering box

About 6 weeks ago I "repaired" my PM steering box by cleaning out all the crud and taking out some of the shims to take out a lot of slack. It worked until now and gave me the chance to finish off some wood jobs that had to be completed by the end of March. I`ve finished all the jobs and the steerin...

Re: Steering problems

Ten out of ten Shepp, that`s exactly what I found, the balls had fallen out of the top bearing and dropped down to the bottom of the housing. When it was all cleaned and reassembled I had to take out 4 shims from under the column one at a time until it gave just a small amount of movement. I also to...

Re: Steering problems

Hi there Pavel, there`s no power steering to worry about. I jacked the front axle end up and all moves as it should but I greased it all while the weight was off it to make sure. I changed the fuel tank in early Jan so the oil was topped up and the nipple on the top of the column greased while it wa...

Steering problems

My PM steering had started to play up a bit just recently, literally making a creaking noise and going stiff occasionally when I turned the steering wheel sometimes. The creaky noise seems to come from the top of the column, under the dash. There is a bush on the column there does it come out the to...

Re: Oil leak from control lever shaft(accelarator) on the in

Hi Mervyn, did you use a o ring specific for that purpose or jut one out of a box that fitted? I ask as I did a John Deere pump a few years ago and was advised to get the JD o ring as it was made to withstand the diesel fuel and wouldn`t soften or harden over time. It hasn`t leaked for years since.

I think getting an old engine started after its been stood up for a long time is the second most exciting thing you can do, good job. Dave

Re: Rescuing an old Major. (Maybe)

Do you know about the excess fuel button ? its on the bottom of the stop lever in your picture, push it in and it should flick back out when the engine starts. Good luck, your going the right way about it, nice and methodical and a bit of ingenuity,I`m sure you`ll get it going soon. Dave

Re: 62 super major lift top gasket

If you go with lining paper smear the two metal sufaces with grease, it makes a good seal and sticks the gasket in place while you fit the lid on. Four dowels dropped into the top corners of the transmission make it easier to drop the lid square on first time, its a bit heavy to faf around with.

Re: 62 super major lift top gasket

Lining paper is a plain type of wallpaper used to paste to walls or ceilings to hide cracks and imperfections before final decoration. It comes in different grades of thickness, I bought a roll of thicker stuff for about £6. Being a metre wide it can make big gaskets, I did the sump with it, and it ...

Re: 62 super major lift top gasket

I bought a roll of thick lining paper from a DIY shop, cut out the gasket shape and smeared both sides with grease and it worked so well I havn`t bought a gasket since - and I`ve still got 24 mtrs left! Dave

Re: identify the tractor type

If not too late, when I split my major I moved the front away from the rear on a trolley jack on a sheet of plywood put on the concrete floor. The jack sank into the plywood and rejoining the 2 halves was a nightmare trying to push a wobbly engine over the ruts.I feel I was lucky to have got away wi...

Re: belt pulley - splines

I think your circlip is a snap clip Henk, which basically does the same job as a circlip. I bent one which retains the bearing on the PTO shaft and spent ages straightening it as I couldn`t source a new one. My son tells me they often come with brake fitting kits at his garage and they throw them aw...

Welcome Ken, enjoyed your story. As you get older you look back and think how did they ever farm with the kit that was available at the time? but they did it, and here we are 50 years later and its still running. Hope you enjoy the forum. Dave

Re: Diesel Major rear brake shoe fitting

Bill, you mention using the translock which I take it is the handbrake, don`t do that or you will weld the the plates together and b----- the thing completely. I can`t offer advice on the drum brakes I don`t know any more than you do, I put new shoes in mine a year ago and the left one works perfect...

Re: Charging alternator question power major

I got an altenator off ebay, sold as fitting all majors then spent half a day making various brackets trying to get it to fit, gave up and returned it. They offered me a fitting kit ( no mention of that in the listing ) which included a flush fitting plug to replace the block drain tap. Told me I wa...

When I rebuilt mine the starter was really slow but it improved after a few weeks, I put it down to increased compression and a tight engine.

Re: Split Power Major questions

Phil, tailor made gaskets are fairly pricey and I`m the original tight ass. I bought a 50 x 1m roll of lining paper from a DIY store and cut out new ones from that, it worked fine with a smear of grease to stick the new gaskets in place and cost a fraction of the ready made ones. My Power Major had ...
