Q. regarding glazing of cylindrs.
Hello, i have a Q. re. FM's & FSM's. We hear quite a bit about having to work these tractors hard, or the cylindrs will become polished and glazed, and blow oil. My question is; Is this problem found more in these tractors than in other makes and models? If so, Why? Any insight into this would be mo...

Nice pictures Roadless! I see your "safety frame" When we were still in England, we had to fit one to our old FM, safety frame indeed!...I don't know haw many times I brayed mi head against it when going over an unexpected bump! Here in the Canaajun west, no needum safety-frame. BTW, we are still ha...

JC, You're quite right about the sound, and they need some heavy work to keep them clean. Mine's got a bit of oil on the manifold from just diddling around. I'd like to find a plough for it. It doesn't appear to have used any oil, but it needs some harder work than the brush mower or hay-rake! all t...

Old FSM still tops!
The 1961 Super is still doing its best to imprss me, and has been successful yet again. After doing all the rotory hay-raking that needed doing on 220 acres, I tried it with a bale-fork on the 3-point, and found it would lift them allright. (about 1100lbs or a bit more) It "dances" a bit,...light on...

Rocker cover breather question.
Here I am again, looking for advice! On the FSM that I'm working on, there is a breather on top of the rocker cover, but no corresponding port for it to go into the air cleaner, like the other FSM has. Q. should it be routed into the air cleaner, or had some FSM's simply a hose down the side of the ...

Len, Lovely pictures, from a time I felt very comfortable in! For some reason, it seemed more "magic" then, working as a team, rather than now,... working your tail off on your own. Pete, The trailers are loaded with those little round bales, mentioned in the previous posts, and most likely straw,( ...

Thank you for the reply, Pascal. The raised pto would be very handy for some operations, plus having the benefit of slowing things down. what prompted my previous post, (Apart from the pto appearing to be "Fast") was a short article on the Fordson Major in Lyle Walkers very entertaing book, "THe Old...

FSM PTO speed.
Another FSM question if I may; I gather the older FM had a standard pto speed of 722 rpm's, and I gather also, that Canadian dealers fitted a revised PTO with an extra ratio that brought it down to the more common 540 rpm...as is was rattling the guts out of worn out Canadian equipment! Can anyone t...

Thanks for the reply, Brian. I will check the things you mention. Re. the pushrods, I "Think" they are correct length. By this I mean the replacements I got appear to match the old ones, but if the old ones were right I do not know. they seem to travel OK and the clearance seems right, but need adju...

Just an update; After thinking about it a while, I set injection pump marks "Wrong" where they were when I got the tractor, and it fired up straight away, but is not running at all right. But Is a bit closer. Do you think a key sheared off on cam-shaft, or that the cam, or whatever has been out & pu...

FSM smoke and no fire.
Hello again, I am having trouble figuring out the problem with my other Super major. Here is a brief history; When I bought it, it would run, after a fashion, but with a terrible amount of white smoke. Very bad to start. Checked timing. lines on injector pump and drive were out about nearly 1/4" whe...

Hi Brian, I think you are right, about not being recognised for how good they were over here. That might be why you can buy one rather cheaply still. (I don't mind!) Here in the west, there are exceptions of course, but largly, three- point -hitch is just something that you fall over, or gets in the...

The old "Super"
I must say, I've been enjoying using the old "Super!" Yesterday, I managed to struggle my last bit of greenfeed in. Only bogged the JD and drill once. When harrowing it in with the super, I couldn't help thinking how they got it right when they made these tractors. Steering, even with miss-matched t...

Thanks for the picture, David. We had two when I was a little lad. Seat fell off one, and it was used for years with a tatie sack tied around the seat "spring" Exhaust glowed in dark when dad was ploughing. Dad had a scar on his leg from when the brake/clutch pedal snapped off, and the stub tore a g...

FSM oil filter
Hello chaps,
Can anyone give me the engine filter number for a 1961 SM?
I used the search, but didn't see anything.
Also, what is the correct top link length for the SM?
Thank you in advance!
and all the best!
Richard.

Brian, I can't see any numbers at all on the little triangle you describe. Had a look at the other SM and no numbers there either. I think I'm looking in the right spot. Today was still wet from last nights rain, so put some of the other SM together. Put sump back on, and head and such. Have to re-s...

Thanks for the reply, Brian. Afer my last post, I used the search, and saw that replacing seals looked a bit of a grim job to what I had first anticipated! I will take your advice and do nothing for a while! (doing nothing has a strong appeal!!) Yes, I had overfilled the rear end a bit. I did it whe...
