Ingition/Light switch for a 1953 FM Diesel

I am still working my way through the charging circuit on my tractor and believe the ignition switch may be at fault (the ignition key has to be wiggled to get it to a place where the ignition circuit is actually live, and I think it might also result in the charging circuit being intermittant(?)). ...

Re: waterpump repair

I changed my pump recently. Having looked around a new pump really wasn't much more expensive than refurbishing the old one, and a hell of a lot less trouble. Whole job done in 45 minutes or so,

Re: New plough - anybody know what it is? FR PM ?

Picked the plough up today. The vendor is a 3rd generation farmer with old tackle a family interest. The ploughshares were greased before spraying, so first contact with soil should see them shiny underneath. All the controls and grease points have had obvious recent attention and the tool looks as ...

Re: New plough - anybody know what it is? FR PM ?

Thanks Henk, that tallies with what I suspected. The paint on the disks and mould boards should not be a problem, my next door neighbour has 1000 hectares and is keen to see me learn to plough on his fields, which should get rid of the paint! (I am treating this with caution. I seem to remember 5 he...

Re: Rebuilding a trailer buck?

Got some good tanalised timber for frame and some 18mm floorboarding (untreated). Then creasoted ALL the soft wood. Got some oak for the side beams. Replaced the rotten planks in the sides today and have started painting.

New plough - anybody know what it is? FR PM ?

I just bought this plough on E-Bay. I think it is a PM series 2 furrow designed for an E27N Major, but I could be very wrong. Anybody know what it might be? http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8070/8224331982_eb356aea9e_z.jpg New plough 1 by CraigWales , on Flickr http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8198/822433...

Re: 1953 Major air cleaner

I have managed a solution which should work just fine. After careful measuring it is clear that the inlet pipe on my Sept 53 tractor already goes under the oli bath level when properly filled. I got an Agriline filter, ground off the flange, which released the pierced bottom plate. wound the wire me...

Re: what lights on a 1954 e1a fordson major

These are the lights on my (third week in September) 1953 Major. I don't know whether they were put on by Fordson, or whether they are an after market item, but I suspect the former, since there is no evidence of a number plate bracket/single rear light ever having been fitted. (see the above post r...

Robert; Why not send them an e-mail? They may be prepared to Fedex the items. Alternatively why not make them an offer for a set of drawings? The worst that can happen is they say "no". Regards; David

FM underslung exhaust - description

I was asked the size of my underslung exhaust. The assembly is in 3 parts, as seen in the photos below: 1. Downpipe (15 1/2 inches from manifold to top of silencer). Silencer : ht 7 1/2 inches l 18" w. 3 1/2 to 4" 2. Cranked pipe. 54" 2 tailpipe bend. 6" These were maunufactures by Cox & Martin Engi...

I'll measure up the silencer sometime tomorrow. The chap that makes them over here did it from the original egineering drawing and told me the baffle system was uite complex.

Re: What wood should I use to rebuild a trailer buck?

Sadly cost has been a major factor. I'm going to use oak for the side beams that hold the side boards in steel sockets, and tanalised softwood for the rest. Originally the trailer was all softwood (now very soft wood as far as the main structure of the buck is concerned!), but has lasted 70 years or...

I like that approach Robert, and the paint job. Like a FM dressed up to go out! I painted the rusty wheel yesterday (A coat of hammerite red oxide fillows by agriline fordson orange, Looks good, especially when I put a coat on the offside front wheel so they both matched. Haven't touched the N/S yet...

To paint or not to paint

I was knocking the rust off my one rusty rear wheel prior to giving it a coat of red primer and considering whether to repaint the other good rear wheel as well, which inevitably got me thinking about a full paint job (or not). My 53 FM Diesel has spent lots of her life under cover (except that one ...

Re: 1953 Major air cleaner

fenhayman is quite right, I think that the securing band was not properly seated. As to the working principle, that seems quite clear. Incoming air is sucked through the oil bath by the induction cycle, then through a lot of gauze to catch any debris and to prevent oil in suspension being carried in...

Re: 1953 Major air cleaner

Having read the whole of the previous thread I think I will just fashion some chicken wire to stop the upper mesh falling out and extend the central pipe about 1" below the surface of the oil bath. Simples (?)

Re: 1953 Major air cleaner

Thanks to both of you. I was just about to order the agriline one! How did you extend the pipe? Of course, without the pipe being under the level of the oil the cleaner is just not working properly. Do you know if a dexta element will fit? I keep seeing them but am really not at all sure. And I will...

Re: 1953 Major air cleaner

Many thanks. That answers most of my question. ( A picture worth 1000 words, etc) , although the upper parts in mine are loose. I think just getting a new lower element may well calm things down enough for it not to leak oil all over. Silverline list the element, but not the rubber seal. I suspect a...
