Re: Considering buying a 58 Major with a frozen diesel engin

Remember to check the oil, make sure you don't have a bunch of water or sludge laying in the bottom of the oil pan waiting to wreck your engine!

Re: Rebuild with problems

As Robert was saying its rather hard to attempt to guess what the issue is but I have a few suggestions as well. I always pull the oil pressure sending unit/tap to the gauge and use a soda bottle full of oil with a squirt top to prime the motor, it will probably take more than 1 full bottle and you ...

Re: Hydraulic wont work

If it still has the original transmission The gears were hardened from County, it should have a tag on the blank cover where the flat belt pulley goes, I don't remember for sure if the gears in the rearend were altered as well.

Re: ignition switch key

So I lucked out again, Im working on a 54 Major that came with no key and the one from Dad's and Grandpa's 58 wouldn't fit. But many years ago I was digging in a Major's toolbox and found a rusty key laying in the bottom, and being the packrat that I am I saved it.... it works perfectly in this 54. ...

I have always had good luck with Dunlop tractor spares as well (actually better and more knowledgeable), but I don't believe I have gotten a steering wheel from them yet.

Sounds like you got things under control, don't forget to go back and check the lugnuts after you have used her several times.

Re: Hydraulic wont work

You got two nice tractors there!
How are you coming along with the lift problem? I doubt that the screen is the cause, as nasty as it is it would probably just cause the hydraulics to be slow, unless it was completely plugged tight.

Re: Hydraulic wont work

Nice collection! I'd give a left nut for that bonnet to put on my Super Six, they are pretty much nonexistent over here in the US. I'm thinking Brian's got you going in the rite direction, I'd put a pressure gauge in the pressure port to see what you have. even the cheap IT manuals give a pretty goo...

Hi Super62, you kinda got your posting in the wrong place but one of the admin's will probably move it to the "Fordson New Major" coulomb. I don't believe any of the regular members here have the tool to do these, I picked one up last winter and to be honest with you, I still haven't got around to f...

Re: roadless axle?

I agree with Brian on the axle, it looks a lot like the JMC axle in my Selene/Manual, except that the front cover looks to be welded on rather than bolted and the outer ball joints that attach the wheel hubs are detachable from the main housing. Makes me think this is the newer JMC with the fine spl...

Re: 6D Power Major

My bad, they are 18.4X30 on a 12" rim. My Selene has the same size but those rims have been widened about 6", witch looks wider than they need to be. I'm thinking a 14" or 16" rim would work better. Most tire vendors list a rim size needed for the specific tire on their websites.

Re: 6D Power Major

I'm going to have to check but I do believe the tires on my trike are 16.9X30, I'll have to measure the rim width as well. And they are still a little bulgy on these stock rims.

I have a 30 gal barrel of oil dry in my shop on wheels, ( not sure if that's what it is called elsewhere) When I'm welding cast that I want to cool slowly I bury it in this barrel of oil dry, works slicker than snot.

Thanks for the offer to go water skiing Brian, but someone would probably have to scrape my remains off a road sign.

They are some interesting machines, You cant help but appreciate the mechanical genius and workmanship of the time that built steam power.

Re: This is the tractor that Rick is looking for

I did a little reading and found this to be a very interesting tractor, they operated these at 600psi! After the steam was discharged from the engine it was sent through the radiator to condense it back to a liquid and then returned to the water tank. I cant help but to wonder if this technology wou...

The Oliver/White plows were known in this area as one of the best, if you look closely at a lot of the bigger Ford plows you will notice they look identical.... because Ford was getting them from Oliver/White. I have good luck with the Kverneland plows, not sure of the availability up by you though....

Thanks Adrian! I got it together enough that it is now usable and had it outside in front of the shop the other day running to get it up to temp and check things over. I've found that it is pushing a lot of oil out the two front cylinders, the two that were clean when I pulled the head off. I'm goin...
