Re: First Start After Rebuild

The O-ring in one of the pictures, is it the one that needs to go between the block and head gasket? That's the seal for the oil feed plug screw for the vacuum exhauster. If it doesn't leak you're better not to disturb it as very few have moved since initial assembly at Dagenham, making for some po...

Re: Minimec timing mark missing

You seem to have a problem many people have, for that is not the original coupling. The original mark is much neater. 23º BTDC is correct.

Re: First Start After Rebuild

Nice Major you've got there. The rust on the crank doesn't look great. Give the engine a decent load or the smoke will never go, these engines were made for hard work.

Re: NP Super Major Adjusting draft control linkage

fordson.se have the whole manual in bits, I think there are other places that have it as one, all in pdf which makes them easy to find some of the time. Not so good when you're actually doing things.

I'm referring to the original Ford manual, here's the NP hydraulics section: https://www.fordson.se/6B_Hydraul_Suple ... 25-050.pdf

Are you sure you're looking at the NP manual? It says 0.010" there.

Re: 590E engine head problems

From what you've posted I would suggest a regrind, bare in mind these engines were made in inches and therefore there might be some confusion with some of the measurements in millimeters. All sizes are specified at the end of the engine section (split into diesel and spark ignition and a supplement ...

Re: 590E engine head problems

I can see the difference in size, I have put a couple of 6 cylinder engines in Majors but they were runners so I didn't get inside them. Would this pump not fit the 590e? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/122031381653?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=FopIq3VmQRO&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=&widget_v...

Re: 590E engine head problems

John I'm afraid replacing the oil pump isn't that easy here, as it's different from the 4 cylinder one to give more flow, hence the discussions earlier. Hopefully someone in the aftermarket companies will see this oversight sometime. In the meantime though it has to be the original pump or a better ...

Re: 590E engine head problems

Sounds pretty good, try all the liners in all the cylinders first then decide which is best where. Ensure the mounting area is clean before doing this. Shims used to be available but I haven't seen them around for ages, CNH might still have some. I wouldn't put the liners in the lathe if possible. S...

I think they are the same but a 6 cylinder manual (Thames Trader or industrial engines) would confirm it.

Re: My New Performance Super Major Story.

3 gallons of coolant, I would suggest you allow for more cold than you get just in case with the antifreeze content in the coolant, it should be ethylene glycol coolant with suitable corrosion inhibitor.
Glad you still have original paint too.

Re: 590E engine head problems

I would replace parts for all cylinders if you need to replace one, other than that I would probably go for the kit. As for the oil pump I would make some measurements of clearances to see what it looks like before deciding (although Ford never specified anything I would suggest that the clearances ...

I see what you mean but it doesn't seem to be an issue in these hydraulic systems as you can have the top cover off many times and it will recover in only a few seconds every time.

The PTO input shaft (live clutch only) will come out easily, but the main input shaft needs the bell housing to come off.

Re: 590E engine head problems

It all really depends on what you're going to do, as if you're not going to give it heavy loads the original clutch will be fine, but under heavy loads it will likely suffer. Even the original live clutch is pretty heavy, which means this new one is heavier. The NP raised PTO is pretty rare.

Re: 590E engine head problems

Head failures are generally from incorrect coolant (corrosion and freezing, not common but very possible), I would suspect insufficient head torque or liner protrusion first, the valves are less likely to be related. If not then look for a crack in the head or the liner (although it's rare in the li...

Re: Stripped Clutch Disk Splines

I can't really answer a lot here, but the disk alignment tool should be easy enough to make (not available new), you can also use an input shaft if that's easier. Most aftermarket suppliers have the other parts, although there can be several problems with some fitting properly due to parts not being...
