Re: Wanted Dexta key

To be honest at a farm/machinery auction it is fairly standard practice to clamber all over the machine and fire it up, check gears etc. Sellers rarely leave the key in place since it soon gets stolen. In 15+ yrs of attending auctions I have never been accosted for starting up a tractor in the aucti...

Re: Major compression pressure

HI, have you checked that the timing gears are lined up correctly, has it been apart and incorrectly assembled? Flywheel timing marks correct? All things which can become incorrectly set if engine been tinkered with. It is unusual for all injectors to give trouble, you would usually hear one causing...

Re: Uses for the belt pulley

A chap near me uses the belt pulley on his major to start some of his old (pre 1930's) tractors with onto their flywheels since many dont have a starter motor and its easier than using a starting handle. Seems to work quite well!

Re: raised pto and x shaft bushes

hi, Certainly live drive Roadless Fordsons are in the minority (I dont think any 6/4 Roadless were live because of the extra power they probably all had the single plate h.duty clutch fitted) I think you have pretty much summed up the raised PTO (I have one waiting to go on my Roadless), it gave mor...

Re: raised pto and x shaft bushes

Hi, I think the majority of the Roadless tractors were probably single clutch as they were often used for heavy cultivation work and the single clutch option was probably cheaper and possibly heavier duty than the live version. I have a '63 live and a '64 non live. The original fordson repair manual...

Re: Tipping pipe

You need PTO engaged, raise lift arms fully and continue to hold lever up, this will then send oil out of the tipping pipe connection (assuming there is something connected)

Oil pressure issue Super Major

Was running a recently acquired Super Major on the baler the other day, tractor had been stored for a long time so was fully serviced before I used it in anger. Oil/filter was changed I used some 15w40 diesel engine oil (along with air cleaner, fuel filters and injector pump oil) Once it got up to o...

Re: Looking for my first Major

Hi, if you are winching trees you won't be too worried about rear hydraulic linkage, you want a bolted on winch such as Cookes or Boughton. I have a Boughton 10ton 2 speed forrestry spec winch but these are fetching good money nowadays and have probably seen their fair share of action. The base trac...

Hi I have some pics taken of a fairly original unrestored late super major, can't get them to upload for some reason but if you PM your email I can send them that way or will try to upload at the weekend when back home with better internet connection. It is a small plastic clip on a metal bracket at...

Re: Need some pictures.

The picture you have there is for a blue/orange super major, new performance is different. I have got bits for one of mine somewhere but it is easier if someone else on here has one on their tractor they can measure up for you. If you are not too worried about using draft control (ie not doing anyth...

Roadless on ebay - caution possible scam

Not sure where to post this but I believe the auction 320925109314 on ebay for a Roadless Power Major may well be a scam, the very same tractor was listed recently but failed to meet reserve at over £6k, it was located near me at Salisbury. Now it is offered by a different seller, no location and a ...

Re: 3 point Hitch parts needed.

A word of caution, if you are missing the draft control linkage (expensive and rare, unique to N>P super) I would advise against connecting the top link straight to the casting that operates the draft control plunger, this will break pretty quickly as the material is very thin. Lower arms can be use...

Re: Basic Wiring Question

Most alternators these days have built in regulators. It is wired in with the ignition switch otherwise the "no charge" warning light on the dash would be illuminated all the time the tractor wasn't running and you would have a flat battery!

Re: wiring

Cant recall wire colours but being that close to starter solenoid it could be horn or dynamo cutout/regulator (especially if been converted to alternator) depending on model as earlier ones had cutout under fuel tank behind dash.

Re: Wheel weights - what is their function?

Wheel weights will give you more drawbar pull since drawbar pull is a function of the coefficient of friction available and the vertical force (ie weight) acting on the contact patch under the driven wheels. On a rear wheel drive tractor extra rear wheel ballast is termed "weight addition". Adding f...

I've just noticed, the picture in Brians post above is actually a new performance super major, so it is fair to say the raised PTO is thus a new performance unit, the rarest of the rare!!

Re: power major raised pto wanted (in nz)

Watch out for different number of teeth on hydraulic pump drive gear, you may need to swap over your original gear. Now one question I haven't found the answer to is if you have a NP shaft these are bigger diameter (2 1/8" I think from memory) and I don't know how this affects the interchangability ...

Re: Can someone tell me what this is

Over here we were using the screw type "dowty" couplers right into the early 70's before the later quick "snap" connectors became popular which is what all Fordson Majors would have been equipped with I suspect. I have a bracket which fits under a super major or dexta seat and allows a dowty couplin...

I did have a 3ton one that was plinth mounted but have since sold it, I do have a t20 fergy one which is very similar except 3 point linkage mounted. I think the plinth ones had a slightly different lever mounting arrangement that utilised some castings on the winch itself. Should be a band brake on...
