Re: stuck in gear

Its a good possibilty that your brakes are stuck from sitting. The same thing happened to my Super 6.

Re: Badge Mounting Studs

Thanks for the info, Timee. I didn't see your post before I wrote mine. I think that I will try to drill and tap for studs. I thought that I would have to use a bottom tap and not a starter tap, now I know for sure.

Re: Badge Mounting Studs

Thanks for all of the ideas! I like the weld studs. I didn't think of that. A friend has a stud welder. I don't know if it would work on pot metal (die cast). You can't weld anything else to that stuff. I don't want to drill all the way through them and use bolts or pop rivets, even though that woul...

Badge Mounting Studs

Two of the mounting studs on one of my Super Major hood badges are broken off. I've thought about drilling and tapping holes for small studs, but I don't think the metal is thick enough. I could epoxy some studs on if it was just a show tractor, but its going to have to do some work, so the epoxy wo...

Re: stuck in gear

I guess I'm not sure that I completely understand the problem. If you haven't started the engine, how can you tell that the transmission isn't in neutral?

Re: Fordson New Major- Getting the Facts Right

The production info was printed from a website. I've been away from this forum and from Fordsons for a long time and I'm just getting back into it. I don't remember exactly which website I got the info from, since its been so long, but I think it may have been http://www.fordson.se. I'm going to hav...

Re: stuck in gear

Is the transmission stuck in gear, but the gearshift moves? Or is the gearshift stuck?

Re: Fordson New Major- Getting the Facts Right

Hi Jim. Welcome. I'm glad to see that you are trying to get the correct info for your article. I can try to answer some of your questions. 1467781 was built in February 1958. I'm not sure about the date of the brochure, but the tractor looks like a '55 or earlier from the shape of the air cleaner to...

Re: 62 super major tach drive problem

I thought it would be right at the end. I have to take the pump off again to put a new governor in it. I’ll look into it then. I just ordered the governor from a shop in the UK, so it may be while until it gets here.

Re: 62 super major tach drive problem

Mine has the same problem. It doesn't look like it has worn this way, it looks like there is a part missing. The square end on the cable is less than 4mm. The hole in the end of the shaft is at least 10mm. Here is a picture of mine.

Re: engine overhaul

You could also use a ridge reamer to remove the the ridge a the top of the bores, then the new top compression ring won't break. If you have that big of a ridge, you should probably measure the bores. It may be time for new liners.

Re: engine overhaul

Since we are talking about liner o-ring grooves, you also may want to look closely for cracks there. I had a Mk.3 block that also had cracks between the liners on the top of the block. Those blocks didn't have upper liner seals, only lower ones. I don't know if the ones, like yours, with upper seals...

I figured that it would loosen up whatever was in there. It looks like it did. I flushed it with solvent two or three times, filled i...

Re: Super Major Governor

I have always liked the way the vacuum governor worked, Rick. Of all the Majors (too many) that I have, this is the only "modern"one, with a Minimec I've ever owned. I know what you mean about the old ones plodding along. We have a Mk. 1 that we bought in 1966. The engine and injector pump were rebu...

Re: 62 fordson power major

I have a trouble shooting guide for Super Major hydraulics somewhere. When I have a little more time, I'll find it and post it. For now, if your Super Major does everything that you want it to do, and the oil level is correct, just run it!

Re: Hour/rev gauges

The Power Major and the Super Major had the same gauges, except for the tachometer. If your Major has a Minimec injector pump, the tach is driven off of the governor and turns counter-clockwise. The Power Major and the vacuum-governed Super Majors turned clockwise. The FMD had totally different gaug...

Super Major Governor

It has been a long time since I have been on FTP and I have acquired at least one more Major and a Super Major since the last time I was here. The Super runs great now that I have cleaned all of the pipe joint compound out of the fuel system and the rust out of the cooling system. It was built in Ma...

You're doing a good job of posting pictures. I wrote that sticky a long time ago and Photo Bucket has changed a lot since then. I just looked at the picture of your top cover and it is the right one for a Super Major.

Re: Fordson Industrial Motor

That engine has 220 cubic inches, like your NPSM. It could be governed to a different RPM, which would change the horsepower a little. Did it come out of a Tree Farmer skidder? You may be able to find the specs for that model and see how many horsepower it had. I would probably just keep it as a spa...

I remember running one of those V-4 Wisconsin powered ones, 30+ years ago. Now they're called Harobeds. Almost everyone around here has one. They've changed a little, with air-conditioned cabs and computer controlled stacking!

The ones here had Ford industrial gas engines, if I remember right. They seemed like a good idea. I'm surprised that more people didn't have them.
