Re: engine on ebay
I can see it would compromise originality. It was differnt in the old Weatherill shovel because the machine has its own chassis. I cut the Fordson rails and basically the engine hangs on the bell housing. I always intended to rig up some form of front of engine mounts but it was used 14 years like t...

Re: ROPS??
Perhaps you or someone near by could fabricate a decent roll bar. They do come up for sale over here when the purists take them off but I would guess shipping prohibitive. In europe a home made effort would not be legal, at least if used by an employee.

For what it is worth that is likely to be the original reg number as most counties switched around to numbers before letters duing the early to mid 50s. BJ was an East Suffolk mark, is there a dealer plate left?

Re: A couple of interesting ones on fleabay
Brian I notice it has odd front wheels are the rear wrong as well? Might be a case of a reasonably original tractor having a set of wheels rather than changing tyres and a replacement engine? Agrre the price is steep but it is ebay!

A couple of interesting ones on fleabay
The Major with the cab might not be particularly unusual but I thought it has a great period look to it with the loader and cab. The Bray would be rare now. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1957-Fordson-Major-Front-Loader-Bucket-Muck-Fork-/260868891163?pt=UK_BOI_FarmingEquipment_RL&hash=item3cbcff621b http...

Re: Oil from Exhaust Elbow
Another vote for work first, some of older IH ( sorry ) engines over the years have chucked oil out of the exhaust, particularly when only on light use.

Re: Rarity on ebay a while back
I reckon that would be a pig with the original Fordson steering. Steering geometry must make a huge difference. The first loading shovel that I drove as a kid was an old Chaseside on a Fordson skid. The steering was all Chaseside and as long as you were rolling and the tyres were not soft it was not...

Re: Dating a Fordson skid with a Weatherill
The engine on the Weatherill plate ties up with all the casting codes save the bull shaft housing but that is only 2/3 months older than other castings. On CMN we are lucky to have the input of John Tutt a former Weatherill service man but he can only date to approx 1954-55. Another number that has ...

Re: Dating a Fordson skid with a Weatherill
Andre has found the code on the bull shaft housing and it is L 29 D which is 28th sept 1960 right at the end of the Power Major era. Perhaps the Army requested a replacement skid to match the old one or they got supplied with what ever was in the bin?

Re: Dating a Fordson skid with a Weatherill
Andre has been able to find a casting code on the rear axle N29D which I believe is Nov 1960. When did the Super start production and did a few Powers get assembled after the Super had started?

As often is probably the case you are out in the backwoods but given a problem you find a way around it. Mind you the average town house holder is not going to be able to keep a Tractor and Genny.

Re: Dating a Fordson skid with a Weatherill
Dave the Weatherill marque started in the very late 40s when Fred Weatherill, the finance director of the rope shovel manufacturer Chaseside, decided that hydraulic power was the way forward. I think their first machine was produced in about 1950 and the machine in the picture would have been the ne...

Dating a Fordson skid with a Weatherill
Hi Andre on the CMN has just bought an old Weatherill 2H shovel. He is trying to date various things. The shovel looks like it out to be pre 1956 but may have been fitted with a later Super engine. He has not found the casting codes on the transmission but the machine plate gives the number 1580513 ...
