Re: Timing - no flywheel marks, no pulley notch, no pointer

If you use a dead stop like Pat did, you can find top dead center. Then you could use a degree wheel and find the timing mark. The Fordson manual says not to use a 75S pump on a mk 1 engine, but I have heard of people who have done it. From what I've read in the manuals, both pumps pump the same vol...

Re: My current project progress pics :)

You could straighten it in place with some heat, but it would be hard to get it perfectly straight. Your best bet would be to take it off and use a press. Can you rent or borrow a tie rod puller to take it off?
Keep posting pics. Your Major is going to look really good when its done.

Hi Steve
Here's how Pat located the timing marks on his flywheel.

Re: Major Compression Specifications

Here's another way to find the compression pressure at cranking speed. You would think that 16:1 would be 16 ats or 16x14.7=235psi, but its not that simple. Compression ratio x percentage of cyl. volume that is being compressed.(you're not compressing the entire volume, because the intake valve is s...

One suggestion. Before you put the paint gun away, you may want to straighten your steering drag link, unless its bent like that to clear a loader frame or something.

Most of mine have a flange on the bolt head with a neoprene washer. A copper or fiber washer would also work. It needs something to seal it.

Good luck with your rebuild. I'll be curious to see what you find when you tear it down.

Re: Clouds of White Smoke

It is a good idea to change the filter and clean the fuel system, If you have any doubt about its cleanliness. Most of our Majors have a little slack in the pump coupling. It can change the timing a slight amount. If you know its there, you can take up the slack before you align the timing marks. I ...

Re: Minimec pump Pressure

I'm of the opinion that your Major will run and start best when everything is set to Fordson specifications. If you have concerns about your injector pump, take it to a fuel injection shop and have it tested. It probably wont cost much to do that.

Re: Clouds of White Smoke

Hi Mark,
Welcome to Fordson Tractor Pages.
The first thing that I would do is check for a leak in the governor diaphragm. I don't have much time right now so I can't explain how to do that, but I'm sure that someone else can, or I'll post more later today.

Hi Gerald and Pavel,
My repair manual says that the injectors should pop at 175 to 185 ats. Where did you find the 160 spec.?

Re: Minimec pump Pressure

If you're not getting enough pressure, it would be because the pump plungers are worn or scored. If that's the case, there should be a lot of fuel running out of the pigtail pipe. What are the popping pressures on the injectors?

I gather that link may not work as ive never done this before ! You almost had it. Part of the code is missing and so is one img tag. On Photobucket, you need to click on the box next to IMG code at bottom right of the page, then paste that into your post. At the top of the announcements is a post ...

There always seems to be questions about posting pictures, so here is a short explanation of posting pictures using Photobucket. Its hard to say without seeing your switch. Did you get a diagram with it? The wire from the fuse should go to the flasher, then from the flasher to the switch, and one wire to each light. Without actually seeing what you have, I cant tell you exactly which wire goes where.

Hi Huw Like Pavel said, the first thing that I would do is get a shop manual. Another thing that may be helpful is to take pictures with a digital camera when you take it apart. You can refer to them when you put it back together. You will want to check the bottom o-ring grooves to make sure that th...

3.3 to 3.75 ft. lbs. is right, but a ft. lb torque wrench set that low on the scale isn't very accurate. A 0-100 in. lb. torque wrench would be perfect.

Re: Engine Identifaction HELP

Welcome to Fordson Tractor Pages. The 5**E numbers mean that the engine was built for a Thames truck. I've never heard of a 538E, but that doesn't mean that there isn't one. It sounds like the numbers are hard to read, so it may say something else. If the casting number by the dynamo is B7J, it was ...

Re: identifying my fordson diesel & brakes issue

Most likely, your Major was built in June, 1954, but there's a chance that someone could have have changed the battery tray and the firewall with it. It would be good to find some casting codes, so that you would know for sure. Since your engine has been replaced, its probably not the same age as th...
