Re: Fordson Major Crown Wheel & Pinion
Hi Dafydd, Quoting from the supliment first paragraph on page 9 says it all for me. " Differential Assembly Quite apart from the locking device a completely different differential assembly (Fig. 10) is used on the Super Major, none of the parts being interchangeable with those used on previous Major...

Re: Fordson Major Crown Wheel & Pinion
Hi Dafydd, I hope you read the information on page 9 of the manual link http://www.fordson.se/5_Bakaxel_Suplement_Verkstadshandbok_001-015.pdf regarding the interchange of Fordson Major and Super Major crown wheel and pinion sets. From the manual it looks like they are different. Super Majors did co...

Re: Help Dating my Australian P6
Hi, F24P corresponds to a casting date of May 24th 1950. That seems reasonable given the engine number. The axle trumpets and the diff housing should also have similar numbers. If you find those and post them we can see how closely all the parts match and get a more exact date. The 270 7007B/C is no...

Re: Help Dating my Australian P6
Hi, I can't give an exact date either just from the engine number. The tractor serial number which should have been on the plate attached to the left front of the dash panel or possibly stamped on the right side of the gearbox flange along with the gearbox ratio numbers would give an exact build dat...

Re: Smithsonian Institution Fordson
Hello, From my understanding a 1918 Fordson would have many differences to a 1924 model. Things that would give the age away will be things like the radiator sides the earlier ones had ladder sides, the type of vaporiser fitted, patent dates on the dash panel, the stamping in the end of the fuel tan...

Hi Matt, You are a lucky man to find a P6 at that price. I have always had to pay much more than that for one and they were always stuck solid. Re: Interesting 3 point linkage implements
Loving your tractor, Frank. How are the back hoe hydraulics driven - by the tractor pump, or by an external pump driven by the pto? Do the back hoe feet lift the tractor's back wheels off the ground, as with a JCB? Regards Adrian Hi Adrian, The hydraulics are driven with a PTO pump. The back hoe ha...

Re: Interesting 3 point linkage implements
My favorite toy is my back hoe attachment. It is only a rather nasty Chinese brand that breaks pins if you push it too hard, but every time one breaks I make a new one that is made out of the right steel and it gets better. Makes those pesky tree stumps much easier to get out. http://tractors.autron...

Re: A "Major" sleeve problem
Hi Kim,
Yes you do wait for the fire to go out. I found that the oil itself tended not to burn, just get hot. To crack the engine free I just used a tyre lever on the starter ring gear, I didn't even have the sump off at the time as I fully expected to be at it for months.
Regards, Frank.

Re: A "Major" sleeve problem
Hi Kim, A trick I have used recently that worked real well was to fill about 200 ml of 50% old sump oil and 50% petrol into the stuck cylinders and set fire to it. I did this after I removed as much rust from the top of the cylinders as possible. After setting the fire about 3 times the rusted in pi...

Frank, The latest number for the Seal is CR 27251. The makers of PR no longer manufacture this Seal. Barry, you never cease to amaze me with your knowledge of part numbers. I ordered a CR 27251 seal and lo and behold it fits. Just for reference it's size is 88.42 mm O/D (3 31/64 inch) Shaft 69.85 m...

Re: Dexta Wheel Colours
Hi Bradson, In Australia the wheel colours on Fordsons varied depending on what state they were delivered in. As far as I know Victorian tractors from the 1950s onwards had red wheels, which matches with the picture you have. Other states used other colours. I have seen another Dexta that looked ver...

Re: Hit a stump. STEERING problems
Hi, That looks like an interesting problem. From the pictures it looks like the top nut was machined to take a circlip to hold it in place in the bearing. The circlip must have popped off when you hit the stump. I don't think any thought was given to disassembly when it was modified so you will have...

Re: siezed power major
Hi, Have you tried swapping injectors around. If you swap number one with number two and two stops running then the injector is shot. If number one stays dead it is the pump. Easy enough to do and it will tell you exactly what needs fixing. Mind you I am laying bets it will be the injector if the en...

I went through the list and the handbrake disks have the same part numbers as the E27N ones. You m...

Be careful trusting the stamped timing marks on the sprocket, cam hub and timing case as these will have been stamped for the old cam. At TDC firing no 1 set the cam to have equal valve lift on inlet/exhaust on no 6, using this method the cam timing will be correct to within 1.5 deg crank and withi...

Re: Oil drop in gearbox
Hi Pascal, There is a second seal on the output shaft of the gearbox. The only way to get to this seal is by splitting the gearbox from the back end. This is a big job so you might want to drain all the oil and pull the PTO box out just to make sure the PTO seal is not the problem. If the seal is OK...

Re: How to replace the PTO Seal on my Fordson Power Major
I drained the front part. When I removed the lower bolt, on the PTO cover, lube was still in it. I thought that it was just in the PTO unit, so I set a small container under it, and walked away. When I checked it again, it had over flowed, and there was lube all over the ground. I take it that the ...
