Re: Low engine revs
I recently changed the diaphragm in my governor which has knocked about 1500 rpm off the top speed, have been waiting awhile in case it needs to soften up but getting fed up now and about to refit the original, beware aftermarket parts made in the land of verynear is my conclusion ;(

Re: Major muffler
Running with no muffler will cause little or no trouble with a Major, unlike a coked up exhaust which is likely to cause crank case pressurisation! I'd disagree with Hywel's when it comes to some two stroke engines, where a precise amount of back pressure may be necessary for correct scavenging and ...

Re: '57 Major, hydraulic faliures - Opinions?
You need to check the pressure relief valve works, normally when the lift gets to the top with the engine a lowish revs you may notice a short drop in speed the hear the sound of the valve venting inside the top cover, if you don't and the engine struggles then the PRV is probably stuck or not venti...

Re: Steering box
I've just bought a litre of the EP00 liquid grease as discussed elsewhere and now widely used for Series Landrover steering and relay boxes, looks as though it will not congeal like a soap based grease and so have a much longer and effective life. I've yet another slime infection in the diesel so wi...

Might County have altered the standard brakes by fitting their own parts instead Mathias - with two driven axles they may have decided a different braking effect was needed ??

Hi Dan, Unless you have the original registration Docs you may be in for a struggle to get your original or an age related reg back, the DVLA are what in other times and organisations was known as working to rule ! Grab a copy of Ford & Fordson Mag from which you can get in touch with Pat Pawsey who...

Re: Diesel Super Major Barely Turns Over / Won't Start
Had exactly the same problem with mine which turned out to be a corroded head gasket allowing coolant into one cylinder. Using several socket extension rods I turned it over one cylinder at a time, one out of the four pretty much locked = combustion space filled with water. If nothing else works sug...

Re: LOOKING FOR NEW HYDRAULIC PUMP FOR FORDSON SUPER MAJOR
I think there may be a few forum members in your part of the world Elias who might help with local knowledge on possible suppliers but it is not a complex pump or system so if you find yourself out of your depth any decent hydraulic mechanic ought to be able to help, the info on here of past battles...

Re: LOOKING FOR NEW HYDRAULIC PUMP FOR FORDSON SUPER MAJOR
Even when 60 years old the pumps can still be quite reliable so the same problem with two separate pumps might indicate you have a problem elsewhere Elias, search here in the New Major pages as there are lots of discussions on things like leaking O rings and non return or pressure relief valve defec...

Re: Different Blue - Ransomes MG2 Crawler
It is certainly 'different' Emiel, I'll try and get a pic when next he is over and has the cover off - it has been nicely done, oil tank at rear with a hole through it for the starting handle. then engine, then seat at the front over the gearbox. it has plenty of power but not much steering so that ...

Different Blue - Ransomes MG2 Crawler
OEH Towers has become the temporary home for a friends newly acquired Ransomes 'FrankenCrawler' an MG2 which has been very nicely fitted with a rare Petter PAV4 aircooled engine and hydraulic drive. It is so not Ransomes looking it is 'right' if you know what I mean, currently suffering from a steer...

Re: Major based Trencher on Gumtree
It looks a bit of a 'project' Emiel, and to avoid any doubts I am not interested in any or all of it myself - my Major is enough tractor for me and I'm in the process of buying a 5hp Petter Victory Model 2 stroke engine that I have hankered after since 1973, nothing if not patient here in Norfolk......

I had that happen Dave, in an HA Viva Pickup on a ring road roundabout in Norwich, at rush-hour - a ball dropped into each notch in the rack so I ended up across the central island with a full RH lock on - good job my mate who came out with Landy & trailer to rescue me brought a hacksaw with him! I'...

Info online gives weight for the N as 3600 lbs 1632 kg
Final drive is worm and wheel which if left standing for a long time can, with the clutch, become very sticky so wheels may resist towing or winching !

Re: Drain Plug thread size
For many liquid containing and particularly tapered threads BSP (British Standard Pipe) is a common thread rate, even in Metric countries, the 3/4 BSP however has a 14 tpi thread rate but if your BSF Bolt does not fit, might be worth checking, the parts list infuriatingly does not specify the rate

Bang on the nail as usual Pavel :) The O ring failure mode that I was warned about was the rings 'jellifying' rather than going hard, my advisor was a long time Nuffield parts dealer who sold E1A bits as a second line, while not knowing, he thought that the softening problem may have been the result...

I've been advised not to use a pressure cap, the cylinder liner O rings can become jelly like so if pressurised you can end up with a sump full of coolant

Re: Intro and the beginning of an onslaught of questions
If you reach behind the seat for the PTO control you mention, you probably have a 'raised PTO' which was an extra (and now quite desirable) fitment, the lever by the clutch pedal engages via a dog clutch, the drive shaft to the hydraulic pump and original, lower level, PTO, a raised PTO takes its po...
