Re: Grey oil on the dipstick
I think there can be issues with that if this engine has been drained regularly, as flushing won't shift the vast amount of serious rust that will be in there, I would prefer to see what state parts are in and where the leak is as if a liner has cracked it needs to be replaced anyway. If such draini...

Re: Grey oil on the dipstick
Theoretically yes, but beware of wrong parts. Before you do anything else drop the sump and do a coolant pressure test, that should tell you where you're leaking. Once you've found where the leak is take that apart and check the parts before ordering anything. only then will you know what you need. ...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
That is what I would have expected, the pic in the manual is from the Power Major era. Those don't look great (plenty of cleaning needed) but I would say you are in neutral. The high low neutral is ahead of the main gears and leaves them disconnected. I would do a tappet clearance check to see what ...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
That means it's the same pointers with this one as with Hyacinth, I remember being surprised at that lever not having the split that all of ours have, if the clamp bolt is tight just work at the lever a bit and it should gradually loosen up. I would recommend you get a plug from a scrapy, as then yo...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
The pointer is attached by the same bolts as the dynamo front bracket, the notch will be in the rear of the pulley. The PTO shouldn't stop the engine turning, but it will add a fair amount of drag. I wouldn't bother with the belt pulley cover for now, those levers do occasionally get stiff if not us...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
You shouldn't need to mark the pulley as it has the timing notch at 29ºBTDC, I suspect it is time to remove the injectors but try this first. Try moving high and low and also disengage the PTO. The clutch will help but with high and low in "neutral" (there's no hole for the detent retainer but I've ...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
I was meaning it more for when you start the engine, but oil is always good for anything that needs it. Have you tried with the decompressor closed in both spots? If even like that it still doesn't want to move I would now consider looking in through the injector holes. Oil in there will never do ha...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
Keep at it, this is one of these things that need perseverance. When you take the rocker cover off I would pour engine oil (with an oil can) over all the moving parts just to give them something to work on before starting up, I would do it just before you put the cover on.

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
Just very carefully. You're always in time to remove the injectors and it's probably worth doing so before attempting to start the engine but if you can get it to turn slowly by hand all the way that will be a great success (once it seems to do so the normal way, in other words clockwise from the fr...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
Great progress! Before you do remove the rocker cover just keep at it a bit, depending on the position the engine is in (near TDC or BDC) you won't get much resistance from compression, with the decompressor open you should only have mild increase in drag when the pistons are in the middle of their ...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
Sounds like a relief, pitty that shaft has had it but if that's all it's a very good find. Many shutters were removed and of those that weren't most are seized solid or badly corroded. Welding thin metal is difficult for experts, and as you see I can't claim to be one, hopefully your friend can help...

Re: FPM - Overheating, coolant being pushed out of radiator...
We'll need to find some way of sorting this as it's ridiculous to have so many companies and none free of criticism. Dropping the sump is a good start, you can pressure test the cooling system like that to see if you see where coolant is leaking out, liner o-ring failures will look quite different t...

I was only saying that in case he wants to buy shims (not that I'm aware of anyone making them anymore), but making them yourself you can fix just about anything. We used something like that on Super Billy as two of the grooves were beginning to be a bit doubtful, so far it's holding. The importance...

Re: FPM - Overheating, coolant being pushed out of radiator...
I'm with John, I think you need a full rebuild. I don't know your serial number but the maximum play between piston and crankshaft is 0.0064" including play between the crankshaft and block, so you'll definitely need to look in underneath. I think you'll want to remove the liners as I suspect a crac...

Re: Measurements for full cover to be manufactured locally for my Super Dexta
Canvas sounds good, our tarpaulin is definitely not in a good state now but it has endured years and years in the weather so can't complain. I think something like what Land-Rover's have would be a good idea, can't really help much more but I know of some Land-Rover's still with their original canva...

Re: Measurements for full cover to be manufactured locally for my Super Dexta
I can't really help you as our tractors are indoors but Davie came with a tarpaulin that we did use to cover all of them on different occasions years ago, but it didn't cover everything. So you'll want something larger than 80" wide and 138" long roughly. Can't really say much more, it also depends ...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
I can't really see the rust, like the look of those radiator shutters. Those mudguards need serious work, and I can say from experience that you definitely want them. Repro ones are really bad and hellish expensive, and not having them is not great. Lots of welding there, it took us two months to fi...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
That to me sounds good. I never recommend heat as it changes things in bad ways if not applied correctly in a heat treatment, all the worse in drought (we'd had it until a few weeks ago and it was combined with hellish heat which is even worse). I wish our temperature were a bit cooler but can't com...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
That was a very sound decision. I've seen too many not taking such precautions with expensive results. Good to know that the pump turns well, diesel and oil could help a lot too for the drive shaft. Maybe that's what's holding the engine! The two bolts you mention are for the crank pulley remover, t...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
I wouldn't be too bothered about that, I've seen others like it. As for the injector pump get a good bit of engine oil in there before you refit the oil and pig tail, therefore lubricating the pump. Diesel will bleed through but that's nothing to worry about. The pic is fine, I can see the chain and...

Re: Our new 4/62 Super Major
I recommend you fix the stop lever first, it will allow you to oil the rack at the stop casing end from outside. From 1613500 till 08B-756398 the lift pump was as you have, yours is totally original. I would keep the extras on, it will have far more power available. It's perfectly possible to fit hy...

Re: Our new 4/62 Super Major
That is the serial number (engines were only different if replaced, Ebro had a separate engine number but it was in addition to the serial number), April 62, one of the last before the minimec. The numbers were changed in November 61 . The stop lever is not easy to work on, probably easiest to remov...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
Good work, yes the injectors need to come off to put oil in the bores. Glad the throttle is free, should hopefully make it easier to get it running. I wouldn't say the oil is very clean but it looks quite ok. Feel and smell are important too, if it feels thin or smells old or of diesel you should ch...

Would like to know as temptation is high but I need to know a bit more before deciding that I need them (which will prob...
