Re: Facebook group

Looks good but can't see anything as I'm not on facebook. If anyone on there needs any help on lorry or industrial engines as well as anything else don't hesitate to ask, hopefully I can find some details for that. Don't forget the great list posted on here years ago https://www.fordsontractorpages....

Re: Bonnet prop clips

Try this: https://www.fordsontractorpages.nl/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5024&p=53955#p53955 It seems to work for many people, I use it all the time and only rarely find that it's not quite working. (don't know if it's something to do with our connection or not though as it is on the poor side) How's...

Re: Super Major wheels won't turn

I'm wondering if there's a differential in there (maybe someone in the past wanted to swap the crown wheel and pinion for the other ratio and only took the original one out), as the issue has to be between the front of the gearbox and the bull pinions (on which the brakes are). Super Major's did hav...

Re: Super Major wheels won't turn

Did the brakes turn when you had the covers off? Sounds like a very big problem, but can't pinpoint it yet. You'll need to look at various gearbox and rear axle areas to see if you can find an issue. Some pics would be great too. It's a very strange problem, I don't remember a similar one. To start ...

Re: Our new 4/62 Super Major

If there's ATF in there the seals could well be in trouble, Ford were very clear about using SAE 10W to 10ºF, SAE 5W for consistently colder, not power steering fluid or any other hydraulic oil. Start with a flush before trying to use it. The exhaust stuck in the elbow doesn't sound great, this is a...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel

Seeing it a bit cleaner I think you might just be able to weld it back to shape, it only looks like a single break with all the stuff there. Not easy welding though, maybe your friend can help. I see what you were saying about paint, I think that came from AC before Ford put the blue on.

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel

What a beauty, this is just like what the Super should have, love the EnFo on the hub. When refitting the impeller it needs to be at 0.030" from the body. You could try some stuff in to remove the leaks but it's not ideal. Depends on where too, as if they're in the tanks they're normally easier to s...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel

Unfortunately no. The Super filter has the breather pipe and also brackets for the regulator, and those are important for the Super. Pitty about the scrappys but if you could ask around you never know, ebay might be of use too but much of what I see is nowhere near you. I see Hyacinth has had a new ...

Re: FPM - Overheating, coolant being pushed out of radiator...

The temporary engine swap sounds like a good idea but you'll need to hunt around for a suitable one. Lorry and industrial engines often have different mounting plates making it more awkward but they will be able to fit easily apart from that. Your serial number will help, as then the lorry and indus...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel

I'm afraid the bowls are not interchangeable, even if they both fit. They're from different manufacturers and mixing them can cause all sorts of trouble. A scrapy should be of use to find a better bowl, you could also try to fix the original one (difficult). The Super's one is original, repro ones l...

Re: FPM - Overheating, coolant being pushed out of radiator...

The serial number should tell you what you have, single o-ring before 1591023 (Super Major). If your engine is not original the serial number will still find what it should have but you can measure the OD of the lip, 4 5/8" for early liners, 4 23/32" for later ones. The spigot diameter will tell you...

Re: Sump Removal Procedure

How many hours has the oil done? Anything below 20 should be clean unless running in and from then on buildfing up gradually, otherwise you'll have issues. Dirt will be worse the shorter the runs, as it forms when cold due to the parts not being the shape they're designed to be for proper operation ...

Good work, keep the diesel and oil going in as you do it (or grease if you can get it to grease now).

Re: Sump Removal Procedure

I agree, see what a gauge reads, there's a high chance that if the pressure is poor there'll be a lot more to do in there so check first. Should lift the relief valve when cold (45 psi) and only drop slightly when hot. Wheather you need them for this or not (that depends on the tie rod, the A-frame ...

Re: Our new 4/62 Super Major

Mainly looks like surface rust but a better view will help. That top hose looks odd. What does the engine oil look like? Watch out for the rubbers on the breather pipe, they can be quite poor and new ones are not easy to get (part no. E28-CG-9, 2" long, 3/8" bore, Super Billy needs new ones but one ...

Re: Hyacinth finally has (somewhat) matching front tires.

Heat has issues on anything, so it can only be a last resort as long as you can return the parts to their correct tratment afterwards (not something most of us can do easily). The hammering is not great either. John's proposal sounds very good, I agree with it being from sitting but also from lack o...

Re: Hyacinth finally has (somewhat) matching front tires.

Great for the Super! How's that spindle doing? Hopefully the diesel will shift the rust, if the grease nipple is still there you could try to get it to grease then try to grease the spindle. You'll need grease there anyway so worth doing.

Re: Hyacinth finally has (somewhat) matching front tires.

You did post about the front wheels being swapped (that's why I referred to the tyres the way I did), I didn't know the rocker cover bolts were too. The reason I brought up the tyres is that your current ones will have far less grip making you have to use more steering brakes. The front axle bolts a...

Re: Hyacinth finally has (somewhat) matching front tires.

Great to see, I see the mudguards are still not there, I can assure you you'll find Daisy very different once her ones are fixed. I think you need better tyres on the front (of the sort on the wheel that came on Daisy's RH side, all of them would be better like that remember they're 7.50-16). I see ...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel

Great news! Looks like it was rust in the starter so give the Super one a good clean too. The stop lever position sounds strange, as the rack and governor parts are the same as Hyacinth, what is different is the stop lever and excess fuel device as you pull the lever out to get excess fuel. Daisy is...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel

It sounds like the brushes are ok, is the commutator nice and smooth or pitted? If pitted you need to polish it, a lathe is ideal but this could be done just by powering the starter and holding sandpaper with a block of wood through the holes in the yoke. I wouldn't dismantle it yet, the Super one m...

Don't use 24V or the starter will melt! Clean the jumper cable connectors, the thicker and cleaner the better. A big battery is definitely worth it, Super Billy has this in. https://i.postimg.cc/pdJMnP85/DSCF0051.jpg Twin batteries are only possible on the Super Major and should be 2 6V units in ser...

I don't see it unfortunately. This is the shot in the manual of the diesel one, the spark ignition ones are different as they're timed more retarded and each have a different pointer. https://i.postimg.cc/T27JZFvg/Fordson-Major-timing-pointer.png You want to look in a scrapy for one, but no real hur...

Comparing Mk1 and Mk2 manifold ports

Having got Mk1 gaskets when we got the kit for Super Billy I thought it would be fun to compare the ports using the wrong gasket (note they are repro parts so accuracy could be doubtful) on our half Super Major's head (which is E1ADDN-6052J): https://i.postimg.cc/nzVDQD3D/DSCF0392.jpg It shows what ...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel

I doubt the hot air will make the difference with no smoke, the tappet clearances are worth checking but when hot. If the pointer isn't there you'll have to find TDC then check, although from what you say the timing should be reasonable (in other words the engine should run even if not very well). I...
