Re: New to this, 6 cylinder engine confusion

Is it leaking water into the sump at the moment? I have 8 590E diesel engines, 4 six cylinder petrols, 3 330 Dovers and a 380 Dover. The 590E is easy to rebuild and parts easy to get. If it is not leaking water at the moment I would not be too concerned. One of my engines was leaking. I pulled the ...

Ford 5000 Gas(Petrol) Tricycle

This must be the tractor tested by Ford Tractor Division (UK) at Boreham House. The description is probably accurate but a little unkind. Somehow I want it.

Re: NP Super Major Clutch

I have replaced the plates in three tractors without any issues. I do not have the special tools but I did get, and you will need as a minimum, the transmission input shafts from a scrap tractor. I also had to remove the flywheel as I use it in the setup of the clutch. Here is the procedure I use af...

There is a picture of a County Super Four in one of Stuart Gibbard's books with that same transmission. I will look into it tonight.

Re: 19" cast wheels, what difference between three and four

Mark New Zealand Power Majors and Super Majors came standard with pressed 16 inch front wheels, 750-16 tyres and 14-30 rear wheels. Rear adjustable was an option but the three spoke cast wheels where not sent not there as far as I recall. I had a Power Major and a Super Major when I lived in NZ. Ste...

Re: 590E engine date and Thames Trader compliance

Just another thing, I've seen in here a picture somewhere of what looks like a standard 4 cylinder rod operated starter motor on a 590E engine. I'd love to keep the rod operated starter but is the starter man enough to throw the six over, and will the ring gear etc all match up if I go out a buy a ...

Re: industrial gearbox and back end in to super major

Ok, the NPSM had diffrent gearbox ratios to the orange wheel. The gearbox ratios are higer in the NPSM, this being offset by a much lower diff ratio. If you have the NPSM with the optional 3.5:1 ratio crown wheel and pinion you have the fastes gearset available. It will be about 1mph faster than the...

Re: industrial gearbox and back end in to super major

The short answer is the ratios are the same. Is your Super Major a New Performance Super or is it the early orange wheel?

Most New Performance tractors had a lower ratio, the older high speed version being an option.

Re: Super Major Hydraulic Issues

Ok. That was the problem. Flow control spindle in back to front. They now work a treat.

I just love a happy ending. :D :D

I just wonder how they went about "fixing" it :scratchhead:

I would never dream of blocking a a port with a screw then consider it "job done, its a good un."

Re: Super Major Hydraulic Issues

Ok, I think I have found the problem. Busy fitting new brakes to my D850 truck today but curiosity got the better of me so I swung back onto that valve late this afternoon. Pulled the flow control valve out. It was sweet and free and was in the correct way. Went to remove the flow control knob. Got ...

Re: Super Major Hydraulic Issues

Ok, swapped the auxiliary service plate assembly off the Dexta. They now work a treat. Tested with a heavy offset disc harrow and they raise very quickly.  So, I will pull the flow control valve out and see what the issue is. :? At least Ian can get off and do some mowing in th...

Re: Super Major Hydraulic Issues

Hi Brian

It is the rear most port in the centre line of the lift that was blocked.

I am also suspecting the flow control.

Super Major Hydraulic Issues

Have some issues with one of my Super Majors and hope someone can give me some pointers. To start with the lift was slow to raise and lower. The oil was like sludge so lift cover off, good clean out along with clean lower filter and new return filter. Checked the control valve and unloading valve, t...

Thanks Steven, Are you saying that the mark 1 six and the 4 starters are Identicle? same windings and armature? Re: 6 cyl starter motor

Mark 1 Thames Traders have the same starter as the Tractor, even six cylinder models. The mechanical start lever came up through the floor next to the gear lever. I have one of these in the yard. After 1961 they all got an electric solenoid. I have confirmed this in the Thames Trader parts book. E1A...

Re: 6 cyl sump

As to the oil pump, later 4 cyl engines have the same pump as 6s. Early sumps do differ in the oil pump area. You need a Power Major or later sump. Steve According to my experience the later 4cyl pump has the integrated pressure valve but the gears are narrower than on the 6 cyl pump and therefore ...

Re: 6 cyl sump

Hello again, my sump at the beginning of this topic, is from a Class combine, just as a reminder. It is also worth remembering that any casting based on an original 4cyl design requires allowance for a different location oil pick up location and needs to be based on the Super Major sump, not the ea...

Hi All. The question of 6 cylinder sumps seems to come up so often in this forum I thought I might ask a good friend of mine who happens to be a pattern maker what he thinks it would cost to make a pattern to cast a new 6 cylinder sump that would take the standard A frame and bolt to a 590E motor i...
