Re: fordson major diesel E1A electrical diagram

I suggest you look at the Ford manual to start with (https://www.fordson.se/7_El_Verkstadsmanual_191-224.pdf), and come back with anything you're not clear about. The serial number would also help as there were a few small changes in this period.

Re: petrol / kero

The gear ratio is the same, I like the idea of an adaptor but don't start on it till you have the angle drive to check everything fits nicely. I'll try to get you some measurements but it's not easy when everything is together so they might not be as accurate as they really should be.

Re: Super Major low hydraulic pressure

Now I see that you have an early Super Ebro, these were only made for a year or so, before the disk brakes and diff lock were added. I got the manuals wrong, the second one does cover the Super hydraulics but it misses the end which is here: https://www.fordson.se/6B_Hydraul_Suplement_Verkstadshandb...

Re: Super Major low hydraulic pressure

My first impression from your description is that what you have is not a Super 55, probably 48 or an Ebro Diesel (some pics would be great). The point on the RH side under the seat is not protected by the unloading valve, so be careful. I suggest you look at the unoading valve and if it seems ok the...

Re: petrol / kero

Great that you're running again. Unfortunately yours is too early for that, as it's only when the large threaded plug was replaced (in 53) that the hour counter became available, the tachometer was offered a bit later. You might be able to fix something up, but it could be quite difficult.

Re: Fitting tacho/hour meter

For any Major between 53 and 58 you need an angle drive unit (E1ADKN-17373B or E1ADKN-17373C), a cable (E1ADKN-17365B or E1ADKN-17365C) and the tachometer itself (E1ADKN-17360C or E1ADKN-17360D or E1ADKN-17360E or E1ADKN-17360F) together with the bracket for it (E1ADKN-17368V or E1ADKN-17368C), a cl...

Re: Super Dexta Hydraulics

I think you'll find that's what they do, as there's nothing to stop them doing it (good job fixing the other issues). Rob, both arms are identical on Dexta's and Super Major's, it's only on earlier Major hydraulics that the arms can be the wrong way round. The only thing that stops the lifting is th...

Re: quick question fuel return line

No washers were fitted by Ford, but it probably is worth it. None of ours have washers and there's no sign of anything wrong with Billy's ones, we'll see about Super Billy when we get there. if all surfaces are good it should be fine, but you will be surer with washers, although then the risk is of ...

The lower one is for the exhaust valves, and all I can think of is the CNH route at the moment. The others you'll just have to live with as they are, am I right in thinking they're like these? viewtopic.php?f=2&t=757&p=4861#p4861

Re: Hydraulic lift slowly drops

Dexta's are not ideal for front end loaders, but the Mil and Horndraulic are the two that come to mind. For operating two double acting rams (assuming you use a different loader) use the dual auxiliary valve, although they're very rare and likely expensive. The Dexta is Cat 1 so make sure your imple...

Re: regrinding valve stem caps

That's a good point Emiel, unfortunately we need new ones as the wear they have is immense (clearance between the cap and collets, not between the valve and cap). Not too long ago I looked at the CNH website and they seemed to have them but we never got any further. If someone is successful it will ...

Re: Our '53 FMD

Nice bearing, Super Billy had some small end bushes like that. That FoMoCo is post Fordson, so definitely a mid sixties rebuild. The head gasket could be much newer, it wouldn't probably have affected much else if someone just decided to replace it. The fact you still have the original pistons sugge...

Re: regrinding valve stem caps

Try it if you think it'll work, but it's very tedious, recutting the seats will be more reliable, but the grinding is still rewuired to finish the job. It took us several weeks to do Super Billy, we didn't recut the seats but it might have been a good idea.

Re: Testing solenoid

I don't know what solenoid you mean, but I wonder if it's an insulated return type. If not then connect a negative wire to the small terminal not connected to anything (it should have a red wire coming from the starter switch). The connection of the negative wire should operate the solenoid, if it d...

I don't think you need worry if it's the composite gasket, it's more of a problem with the copper gasket as fitted by Ford. The excess is so wee the composite gasket will easily survive well.

Re: Small end bushing

Bent conrods can bite back, but hopefully if the small end bush is finished parallel you should be ok if there are no excessive stresses. I like the use of the calliper to check this. That's quite a difference in sizes, but hopefully the new ones will be ok. Best of luck with the reaming.

Re: Gearbox refill setups!!

To replace the PTO shaft seal the casting needs to come out, as Emiel says that's where the dirt will be so a good clean here is well worth it. Other than that there's nothing difficult about this apart from the weight of the PTO casting. The main seal is much harder to do as you need to split the g...

Re: Small end bushing

Very interesting, I like this kind of thing, how did you set up the reamer to get it parallel to the big end? I think the I&T manual got this from the Ford manual at some stage, but it's good to know that it's there. Very good looking finish, the fact that it's running fine is always a good thing. S...

Re: Gearbox refill setups!!

Not too sure what you mean, the main seal on the transmission large gear is E27N-7082A, the PTO shaft seal is E1ADKN-7297A (double lip) or E1ADKN-7297B (single lip, two were fitted back to back), and the PTO selector (not relevant for the gearbox to rear axle leak) is E27N-7262A. E1ADDN-7297 is not ...

Re: engine/transmission dowel pin question

The measurements sound ok, the spigot would add at least 0.010" so no problem (assuming your liners do have a spigot, they really should). If the gasket you have is as Agriline say then there shouldn't be the same issues as there would be with a copper one.
