E27n date required

Post by Kevinmcd »

Hi all,

just new to the forum, and just bought an E27n pp today, can anyone help with Dating the tractor please.

number on bellhousing is T57037R, number on engine block stamped on left hand side appears to be D8K, and finally number on gearbox appears to be H12 K tractor has hydraulics, unfortunatley no lift arms and also is fitted with a pto, I plan on restoring the Tractor, might need help of the experts on the forum

thanks

Kev

Hi Kev,

engine casting number D8K - D = April ,8 = 8th, K = 1947 therefore 8th April 1947
gearbox - H12K - H = June, 12 = 12th, K = 1947 therefore 12th June 1947

so made mid 1947

Don't recognise the bellhousing number though, its usually stamped 2243, SR43, 2275 or SR75 and indicates gear ratio.
- Get a copy of Allan Condie's Fordson Major 1945-52, it's a good starting point for info.

high top gear should be stamped SR75 or 2275 on the r/h/s of the g/box bellhousing.
replacement engine numbers can be stamped there also, but I don't recognise the type of number you have, could be a dealer's code.
- the high top gear is the one to have, still not very fast though !
Got any photo's?

Having the number T57037R on the engine bell housing shows that the tractor has had a Ford reconditioned engine fitted T standing for Tractor and R for Recon the table below shows that the engine in your tractor was reconditioned in 1953

Thanks Matt,
The tractor would still be a 1947 tractor, I assume?

Yes, still a 1947 tractor just that it had a recon engine fitted in 1953 there are quite a few about with recon engines as a lot of dealers kept a service exchange unit. Another interesting thing which Ford generally did on these recon engines is that they stamped the size which they bored the cylinders out to on the front end of the gasket face where the valve cover plate bolts on under the manifold.
