Engine rattling and shaking on high rpm

Hi guys,

A friend of mine bought a 4 cylinder E27N with the Ford petrol engine (so not the Perkins one). He is currently working on a complete restoration.
As both he and I know very little about these machines, hereby some questions:
- After the restoration the engine starts right away and runs great at low rpm, but as soon as it runs at higher rpm, the engine starts rattling and shaking.  Do you have any idea what the problem could be? Bearings on the crankshaft? My friend told me that the pistons are good and he had had machined new piston rings, so they should be fine.
- Is the engine basically the same as the Fordson F and N for the bearings and pistons?

No, the flywheel wasn't taken off.

Do you know if the crankshaft bearings and so are equal to a Fordson F or N engine?

Can you try listening to different parts of the engine with a stethoscope to determine where the noise is coming from?

Hi,

Engine is basically a N engine, crankshaft is different for clutch, and depending on year of N compard, pistons and cilinder head is different.

WIthout hearing the engine running it is difficult. Higher RPM indicates small end bushes or pistons to small for bore. Big ends and main bearings are noisy when on tick over as well.

Is the starter motor disengaging?

You might recall the "High speed" for the engine is only 1100 rpm,

just slightly above "tick over" for a modern automobile )

Sounds like a Wrist pin, possible broken piston. Take a screw driver and hold your ear up to it while moving around and placing it against the block. Where you hear the noise the loudest. That is the cylinder with the problem is. Dandy Dave!
