Hi,
E27N's imported into Australia were fitted with Spark Arrestors. Several have now been brought back to the UK, I have one and I was chatting to the owner of another who would like to fit one to his tractor instead of the UK standard upright exhaust. I wondered if any of our Australian cousins could provide details / drawing / maker of the arrestor - in fact anything useful?
Another question Australian tractors appear to have been fitted with a pressurised cooling system. The standard UK calorimeter was replaced by a 'gauge' at least that seems to be the case with my tractor and others I have looked at. Would someone be kind enough to post a picture of their gauge so that I can be sure that the 'remains' I have are correct before I spend good money having it restored. (That part of a restoration is way outside my scope).

Next door purchased one around November the same year it had one fitted.

Also what was the position regarding radiator shutters some Australian tractors that I've seen have them and some don't. Anyone know the answer to this?

Found this UK answer to pressurised cooling on an E27N! The Bungee Cord looks a little tired - maybe straining to hold the pressure!

it is my understanding that all E27N, New Majors & Majors had shutters till the change of engine in 1958,
They are not listed in the 1958 and later parts books used in Australia.
No shutters on 1958 & 9 Majors, Power Majors or Super Majors.
There was a real risk of destroying your engine here, if you forget to open the shutters once warmed up.

Here is a picture of a Spark arrester I picked up from a farm dump a couple of months ago with the intention of making one myself for my Power Major.
This one is rusted and the internal construction can be seen, and two types of welding techniques.

The Brass Cap is for cleaning out the soot. The way to do it was:-
1. Undo Brass Cap.
2. Start engine.
3. Block outlet pipe.
4. Stand back and watch the soot fly out.

As I suspected. That style of spark arrestor must have been very efficient at doing its job if it had to be cleaned on occasion. Thanks Barry, Dandy Dave!

Hello Pat,
sorry can't help with the bottom bit very easily as our computers speak a different language and it is getting lost in the translation, the original picture is full size and some people can see it in full size I believe?
I will have another try with the dimentions but doubt that you will be able to see it.

Oh by the way I have never cleaned out my dads one or ever heard of anyone doing this, so it can't be much of a problem.

Arrow indictaing that the tubing is 6 1/2" to 7" long
Also the larger tubing itself is fabricated with an oxy welded seam, but these days it would probably possible to purchase 6" exhaust tubing.

The reason that part of the pictures are missing is because they are too big. They should be re sized to no more than 800 pixels in width. If they are too wide, the forum software crops them to the right width. Most photo hosting sites have an image re sizer that you can use before you post your pics.
