mmm maybe thinking touch in to this - but is it like a hand crank assisted electric starter ?! on the front of the crank !? tbh I don't know much about these old school fordsons but that is interesting ! be nice to know if anyone else knows how it really works !

I read the comments and its something to do with good compression and turning on the coil

Hi
my computers messing about tonight and it won't let me watch the clip but i seem to remember watching it before, on a nothing better to do night  .
I think the guy is turning the motor to near the point of spark on a cylinder( close to top dead or at top dead/just past even) and the fuel in the cylinder is ignited by the spark being let in the cylinder, pushing the piston down and making her fire up.
I guess it works a bit like a blank cartridge on a field marshal single cylinder Diesel, if you've ever seen a guy start one of those with out the handle, there are clips of it on tube if not  .

Hi on a forum like this that's world wide it's hard to know who has seen a field marshal in the flesh let alone seen one started with a cartridge. I guess from your comment you are well versed in the ignorant little beasties  so you being in the know does my other post sound about right for what the guys doing to start the fordson :?: :)

This is actually very common if you have a viberator coil system in a Fordson F, or a Model T Ford. I have even done it myself. The engine has to be well tuned, carburetor set just right, and the valves and rings have to be in excellent condition. The cylinder that is ready to fire needs to be past dead center. The secret is in the Viberator coil. As as long as it is buzzing, it is throwing a spark. Gas left in the cylinder ignites, and the engine will start just by turning on the switch, and sometimes moving the spark control is necessary to line up the roller in the timer with the contact. Try this with any hand start

Pull through all four cylinders with the spark off and "appropriate" choke and throttle settings.

Then, set the spark advance to dead retard, but not at cut off.

Pull the crank up steadily (not quickly) until the piston is nearly TDC
pause a second or two
Then nudge the crank until the impulse coupling ticks.

enjoy the chuff, chuff, chuff as the engine starts with little energy.

I have had a bit to do with thumpers Vf crawlers mostly :D while I am unsure how that fordson is being started you theory seems about right I've never seen it sone like that . I have accidentally started a John deere by leaning on the flywheel that was a bit of a shock !
