Problem with starting

Hello,

I have a problem with trying to start my fordson major, at first I thought it was the battery but what happens is that I try and start it but smoke was coming out from the solenoid ( mine had a starting lever) I have replaced all the battery leads and the one from the starting motor. is the solenoid fried ? could I change the starting lever to a push button solenoid?

Thanks for that, I have now sorted it by replacing the solenoid.
