Hydraulics Question

Post by preppypyro »

Hey guys n gals, I have a 1962? (someone can verify that with this serial number perhaps as well... 1585794 found on the engine above the injector pump) Super Major, and I am working on getting the rear hydraulics working.

It currently has a hydraulic pump driven off the front of the engine and it just run the front end loader.

It has the female ends on the back of the tractor, that are hooked up to what looks like a hydraulic lever (its kinda odd looking just one lever) and then the lever hoses are unhooked. (so I have no working rear hydraulics)

Basically I am wandering if the tractor has a built in hydraulic pump that I can plumb these rear hydraulic hoses into, or if I should just plumb them off of the hydraulic pump that is driven off the front of the engine. If needed I can take a few pictures to help try to describe what I am talking about.

I had figured most of these tractors came with factory rear hydraulics, and if mine did, I would love to hook them up like they would have been from stock!

Your engine mounted pump would just work the loader. You will also have a hydraulic pump driven by the PTO shaft, in the rear axle. This operates the lift arms.

Usually the tractor had an auxiliary service plate with a pull knob that diverted the oil from this pump to external services, like a trailer tipping pipe or into the ram cylinder to work the lift arms.

In the US, a number of tractors were fitted with a spool valve which did not have the correct porting for the tractor. It blanked off the ram cylinder ports allowing only operation of what ever was connected to this. I would suspect this is what has been done to your tractor.

Your tractor is January 1961.

Hi I wondered if you could post up some pictures so we could see what you have. I am across the border from you in Manitoba and may be able to help you If I can see what you are working with. I have a few tractors with different set ups for spools on.

Thanks for the replies guys. Im just at work right now, and will for sure post some pictures so you guys can see what/where i am talking about.

That would be awesome if I could figure out how to hook the back hydraulics to the tractor, which was my goal.

Where abouts are you from in Manitoba Robert?

Hi I Guess Its a small world on the internet these days.
I have never seen that style of block here but the ones i have work the same.
You Have 2 options with what to do with it.
1) as Brian stated you should have a selector plate on the hyd top chest under the front of the seat. That has a port on it and a selector knob To change from 3pt to external hydraulics.
You could connect the in port to the spool in there and the return pipe back into the filler plug on the rear of the hyd top.
The ports on the blocks should be marked with arrows pointing to flow in or out pressure or return or maybe something else you will need to look to see what you have on there.
This is the way it was done by the dealers in Canada when it was new. There is a factory fit double acting valve available but they are hard to find in wrecking yards as they have mostly been shipped back to the u.k by a tractor dealer. But If you can find one it is a really nice fit and looks very good. It gets away from miles of extra hoses.
If you choose to do this you will need to have the pto in gear to run the hydraulics on the tractor all the time you are using it and the 3pt arms.
2) As you have the independent system for the loader you could loop the second block into the lines from the loader control block by coming from the return from the loader block into the intake on the second block then run that block return back to the loader tank return pipe.
This method would give you a completely independent spool that would not need the pto to be running all the time. you would just have to engage the pto when you wanted to use the 3 pt hitch.
I guess you have to decide which is best for you and the best way to make the pipes look neat and tidy.
I see that you have most of the 3pt missing do you have it laying around or are you needing replacements. if you need to find it send me a personal message and ill put you in touch with some of the guys i deal with and you might get a half decent price on it.
If you need any more help just ask.

Thanks again for the reply.

I will do a little searching and looking to find all the ports and pieces that you described for me (which was an awesome description!)

The three point hitch hasnt been used for years, and the arms have been long gone, probably out in this old farmyard, but I cannot find them.

Ill send you a PM for sure. I have talked to the fordson used parts dealer in unity (great guy, sold me a water pump) and he is wanting 100 bucks per piece.
