Holes in the rear end cover

Brian,

I have two holes in the middle of the cover were the seat will fit on.
My Major was sold without a hydraulic system so I put the cover on from another tractor. The casting code say N22V, so December 1954. Cant understand way yours and the tractor we stood next as well as the one on the picture do not have those two holes.
Anyone else with the extra holes?

The one on the picture is one I have sold once and has only the four holes.

all my Majors with hyds on have 4 bolts for the seat apart from the supers that have 2 in the centre and a completley different top. all the majors with the flat top had 2 bolts in the centre as I belive the seat and spring was very close on these tractors and the E27n. The hyd top style seat tipped forwards and had rubber suspension (no spring like E27N) I guess you just need to buy that seat bracket and seat to convert it over To 4 bolt mounting.

I knew I had seen a picture somewhere.
This one is from the Wiki identifying your Major.
It is the same as mine. So there seems to be two sorts of covers.

Robert,
I don’t want to change the seat. Its a deluxe with H.P.L. (What ever that should mean). And I want to use the two bold setup.

I just looked in my power major parts book it shows seats as delux with and without h.p.l it looks as if there is an adapter plate that fit on the 4 bolt mount to convert over to the 2 bolt centre holes and maybe it altres the seat height as with no hydraulic top the seat would sit lower.
Is the seat you have already a flip style bucket type seat. or i am wondering if it is the type of delux seat that has the rubber mountings and screw suspension adjustments like modern seats.
I think it was an option on Super Majors and some Nuffields and others too. if it is that seat it may not fit your tractor as it could be to high to reach your foot pedals.
if the height is correct for good driving position you would have to drill and tap holes or make an adapter plate to make it fit. . There is a post in the parts board of guys wanting one. Could you please post a picture and then I would no for sure if we are on the same thing. It would be a great help

Henk,

You know more about Henrietta than I do! But I went out and checked after reading your post and found, yes there are two holes there but neither are very deep and neither have threads in them.

Henrietta is fairly early and is missing some other holes. There are no holes underneath for mpounting a pick up hitch.

Majors without hydraulics have a "bent spring" seat on the plain top cover. Wonder if the holes are a throw back to that, and were put in to allow that seat to be transfered when a hydraulic lift was fitted, hydraulics being an extra in the early days.

My seat that is on now is a pan seat and I made a bracket as in the picture above. The seat has no spring bal at the rear but I made a suspension myself. It works good but its not original.
The seat that was on it when I got her was the one Brian is talking about with the large bent spring. I took the seat of, welded a hinge on the front to fit it on the self made bracket and it flips over to the front.
The seat I have bought now is the deluxe with h.p.l. and it flips over to the back. It also is used on the Dexta.

The one you mention with the rubber mountings and screw suspension adjustments is the RestORide seat.
Boy would I want one.

Could be, but putting the bended spring seat on the cover would make my legs half a meter to short to get to the pedals.
Strange Henrietta has the holes but not the threads.
Mine has threaded hole, but as you say not verry deep.

Now i know what you have it makes it a lot easyer to understand

. I guess you have to make an adapter plate for the 4 bolts down to the 2 bolts or hope you can drill 2 holes without drilling into the hydraulic oil areas in the top cover. Then hope your legs are long enough to reach the pedals with your seat on it

Mine has the two holes. The one on the upper picture is one i sold. So I wont have to drill.
But Brian and I notice that there was some differents between the covers. The tractor we have seen in Meddo with my new seat made a bracket for the four holes because he had only the four holes.
I let you know if my legs are long enough.

Check the holes today, I tought they were threaded but NO. Seems I have to cut 1/2 UNC in them.

So I could not see if the seat fits well for the tractor and my legs.

The seat is on.

I thought there was no thread in it. It should be 9/16 UNC. I don’t have that tool. So I wanted to put M14 pitch 2 mm in it. That’s almost the same.
Drill the hole with 12 mm and dirt, paint and rust came out.
Than the first of the three tappers went in and I realised there was thread in it.

The second went in easy. The third also, so I was thinking it was M14.

Try to turn in a bolt with 9/16 thread and it fitted well
