New "new major" owner

Hi there, I just rescued a Fordson out of a field where it has stood on the South Australia/Victoria border for at least the last 4 years. A few quick questions please:
A. Engine number is 1434127 so this makes it a 1957 New Major......yes?
B. Can the brakes (inboard in my terminology) be relined without removing the rear wheels?
C. Where is best place to buy/download a workshop manual?
D. The unit has no ignition key and has been hot wired with 3 wires having to be held together to start it after which they are just released and the tractor runs fine. I'm guessing that at least 2 of them should remain in contact to keep the charging circuit active. Can I get a wiring diagram or some advice on this?

Bomoh,

Welcome to the board. Your is a New Major June 57 with mark II engine. Throttle is going behind of the engine instead of through.

A picture would be nice.

You will work al lot easier when you remove the wheels to get to the brakes. Loosen up the shoes by the gear wheel behind the long small plate on the inside of the brake housing. Than you can get the brake drum off.
If you just have to set them again you will have to do that also by that hole and the wheels can stay on.

Hi Bomoh, Welcome to the board, you’ll get plenty of help here and the opportunity to debate things about your FMD.

Re you brakes, I’d suggest you get the jack out and get an axle stand under for safety and get the wheel off. Read the post “FMD Brakes” and you’ll see what I did to my brakes and the corrections made to my mistakes by other board members.

OK thanks.............at last you can see my 2 tonnes of scrap masquerading as a tractor.
Just goes to show the original build quality, 4 years in a field unloved and all seems to work apart from the brakes. luckily I have flat land!

You have the wide tyres and wheel weights. May be two persons are needed to mount the tyres again.

If the distance between us should be shorter, there could be a good opportunity for my tractor driven sandblasting equipment. With 4,5 cbm/min and 9 kilo pressure a short biz. Your tractor looks very interesting in this respect.
