At last a result! just need parts now

Post by Millwall Paul »

Well finally got the sump off of the engine and found the reason it seied up. Some how I don't know how I managed it I managed to bend the oil pump pick up pipe when refitting the sump. This caused the pipe to hit number 3 con rod bearing and break off resulting in no oil. On the plus side only number 3 con rod bearing picked up. I'm going to have the crank reground anyway as the bearings are all standard size. But heres my main problem. Where would I be able to buy or get a pick up pipe to replace the one I mangled? Everything else in the engine looks remarkably good and with very little wear. I'm a lot happier than I should be seeing as it was my own incompetence that caused this cock up.

Hi
I have seen your problem before on a major about 20 years ago :) I think it is caused by the filter screen on the bottom of the suction pipe not being in the correct place or binding up on the pipe when the oil pan is jacked up onto the motor  When i put the major oil pans on if the motor is in the tractor I dont use a jack just 2 people as you can feel if things are not going right . yes it is heavy and not that easy but a screw up here is expensive as you are finding out. a 5 ton jack doesnt have a feel to it when it bends an oil pick up pipe. If the motor is out as yours is now I build the bottom end of the motor and put the oil pan on while the head is off and the motor is upside down resting on blocks then the suction filter cant fall off gravity helps keep it on :) I hope this kinda helps ya a bit
Regards Robert :)

Hi, I'm guessing thats how I managed to do the damage. I'm feeling lucky in that I got off lightly with the ammount of damage it did to the engine. I'm just finding it a bit hard trying to locate a new pick up pipe. I might well end up making up a new pick up pipe myself as they seem very elusive to get hold off. Oh well you live and learn. I'm just happy as it could have been a whole lot worse.

Hi Paul, I have one on an old block but not sure where you are located, I understand to ship to UK is expensive. I have a picture on my camera if you have any interest, it has some rust on it but believe it would be fine after clean up. Good luck.

Hi Gman

How much would you want for the pick up pipe and what would shipping be to the UK England please? Also could you send me a pick of it please so that I could make sure it was the right one for my tractor.

Thanks
