Hi all,
Over the past two years I have been slowly restoring my new performance major. One of the gearbox bearings had broken up so when I had it apart I replaced them all. I also rebuilt the engine and I was finally able to drive it yesterday. It goes through all the gears fine but it still whines in low gear. It is not as noticible in high and low third. When I had it apart I checked all the gears and none seemed to be worn or chipped. I have the parts book and workshop manual so am pretty sure I have it all back correctly. I have 15W30 oil in the gearbox. Would this be too light? Is noise in the gearbox normal. I thought that it would be smoother with the new bearings. What do you all think?
Kind Regards, Liam
Super major gearbox noise
Re: Super major gearbox noise
Majors have a noisy gearbox from new. From 1952 to 1963 they clattered Live Drive being the worst, after 1963 they whined due to a different profile on the gears. It is not something to worry about.
