Major - how many HP?

Post by Bensdexta »

Can someone say what hp the various new Majors were - there seem to be various figures banded around the literature?
TIA

Are those powers measured at the belt?
Thanks

Do not know where Alan Condie got all his figures, Henk, as they do not line up with the official Ford ones. They go by engine numbers because Fords changed the engines some time before they were officially introduced.

The Mk 1 Diesel from engine number 1217101 to 1425096 is given as 40.5 Brake Horse Power, bare engine with dynamo and water pump, less fan.

Mk 2 Diesel from engine number 1425097 to 1481090 is given as 44 Brake Horse Power, bare engine with dynamo and water pump, less fan.

Power Major engine/ Early Super Major 1481091 to 1599501 51.8 Brake Horse Power, bare engine with no ancillaries.

Super Majors from 1599502 to 08C960337 51.8 Brake Horse Power, bare engine with no ancillaries.

New Performance Super Majors 08C960338 to end of production 53.7 Brake Horse Power but measured at 1925 rpm instead of 1600 rpm, again with no ancillaries.

All the testing was done against a Brake with a bare engine so there were a lot of losses once they attached the gearbox etc. That is where some of the confusion comes from.

Thought we had this data on the site. I will check.

(Later).

Thought it was, its in the stickies at the start of this thread. I got it from the Ford data sheets along with the other bits like torque figures.

Petrol engine is given as 39.5 hp and the TVO one is 38.5 hp.
