FORDSON MAJOR 3 POINT LINKAGE OIL
FORDSON MAJOR 3 POINT LINKAGE OIL
HI GUYS FROM AUSTRALIA AGAIN. THE PROJECT 1954 FORDSON MAJOR PETROL/KERO I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON IS ALMOST FINISHED. I RAN IT FOR ABOUT AN HOUR LAST WEEK AND EVERYTHING WORKED WELL. I RAN IT TODAY AND THE 3 POINT LINKAGE DIDNT WORK. NOT UP OR DOWN. MY QUESTION IS WHERE DO I CHECK AND FILL THE OIL/FLUID AND WHAT OIL/FLUID SHOULD I PUT IN IT? ANY HELP APPRECIATED. THANKS http://i1179.photobucket.com/albums/x38 ... C03071.jpg[/IMG]

Re: FORDSON MAJOR 3 POINT LINKAGE OIL
aye up
nice work on your tractor
the dipstick to check back end oil is near the clutch pedal and if you need to add any oil the filler plug is just behind the seat in-between the lift arms.
also did you have the pto in gear the lift arms wont work without the pto in gear.
regards wayne

Chris,
The guy in the seat has grown a bit.
Great result. Now you can dig some holes.

Hi and Thanks for the info Wayne. I checked the dip stick beside the clutch and the oil was like white pea soup and super full of water. ( almost to the top of the dipstick ) Where would the drain bolt be for these and roughly how much oil should I put back in it? The pto was off for a bit. When I put it back on it still didnt work, do you have to leave it on for a bit or should it work instantly. Thanks again.
Re: FORDSON MAJOR 3 POINT LINKAGE OIL
hey mate nice work on the fordson do the same model up aswell just with a diesel engine
you can drain the box underneath the machine between the axles should be about 1 1/2 inch nut with a large circle around it about 3 inchs wide
the oil is 50 weight so i was told - im from australia as well
the water in the oil should effect the hydrolics... its not good for it by any means! but mine ran fine with milky oil for years
more then likely a problem with the lydrolics plenty of topics on here about them
where about you from?

How about looking at the post by Brian, 4th one down on the Fordson Major page, re. oils for Majors. It states that 20/30 oil is recommended by Ford for all three systems of the tractor. In the hydraulic system it allows a faster response time to the grade originally specified.
I'm also in Oz [s/west WA] and use BP Castrol formulated for tractors in a working SMD on a 700 acre farm.

Re: FORDSON MAJOR 3 POINT LINKAGE OIL
Hi, PTO was put back on and 3 point linkage is now working. Goes to show how much I know about tractors. I am still going to change the soupy oil and hopefully I will have a hassle free tractor. Ha Ha. I,m West of Brissy at a place called Blacksoil. To those in Australia I am still chasing a good left hand side bonnet 1/2, and a good manifold to elbow Thanks again

if your dropping the oil in the back end make sure you have a few large containers as there's about 40l in there , and as you say it's also up to the top of the dipstick so there will more, there's nowt worse when your container over flows and oil pisses all over the floor and when you try to get the drain plug back in you get covered in oil too
