how much oil for my major

Hi all, im posting my first question as a new member to the forum.
Ive just purchased my first FSM (in fact my first ever tractor)and was wondering how much oil it should take as it took 14 liters, is this normal? I must add it has an engine number S846821 which, after reading some of the forum notes i think it may be an industrial engine of some sort. I believe i have a 1961 tractor that was registered 13/1/62. numbers i have located are as follows:M5Fon sump and gearbox, L18F on hydraulic casting, OJ25 above starter motor on the block, 6058G and J3167 above injector pump and E1ADDN6015G under the pump. hope your not to confused now and hope someone can help me. many thanks.

Welcome to the board.

You do not say where you put the oil but the engine only holds around 7lt, gear box around 20lt and rear axle is around 40lt. The information is in the oil specs just up from this post.

Yes you have an industrial engine so the dates may be out for your tractor. The numbers do not make a lot of sense but it could be a 1970 or a 1960/July 25th block. In 1970 the blocks were no longer cast at Dagenham.

The other numbers from the sump, gearbox and hydraulics give September/October 1961.

it was the engine oil i changed and i had only purchased 10 litres so when i drained out 14 litres i was surprised,to say the least.I have read that industrial engines have different oil pumps and sumps so was wondering if ive got a big sump or just a very short dip stick as the level reads right on that.

It is possible that the dip stick is too short. 14 lt is a lot even for an industrial engine. Any chance of a picture?

Ill try to get some pictures on if i can work how to do it.
The dip stick is 125mm or 5" in old money(thats the end which is in the sump) plus the pull handle and has SAFE and FULL etched on it.

Hi im back with another question Are the dip sticks on early majors/power majors the same as a super major as ive compared mine with my neighbours
(keep your minds on the question ) and mine seems 2" shorter than his. Is mine a wrong one-can you help.....

The dipsticks were slightly shorter in the early Majors but it was only about 1/2".

Because of oil being thrown out of the dipstick hole on the early tractors, around 1953, a short metal tube was added to the dipstick hole and a sealing cap fitted on the stick. The oil level and capacity of the sump remained the same throughout the range, the stick was modified to allow for the tube.

You seem to have the wrong dipstick.

Thanks again Brian just what i needed to here. Ive just ordered a replacement dipstick so hopefully my problem is solved and the next topic wont be oil related.
