Post by meusy351 »

hi there,
i just had the head and valves on my tractor fixed up and new injectors fitted.ive set valve settings correctly and retorqued cylinder head bolts after running up to operating temp.it bellows white smoke smells like deisel.
it does a little pop from the exhaust like a backfire.do i have to re-set the injector timming?any help would be greatly appreciated.

White smoke can be un-burnt diesel as you say. This is caused normally by either low compression or faulty injection system. Popping in the exhaust is definitely valves.

I would recheck all you valve clearances to start with, then, with the engine running, slacken off each injector pipe to isolate the any misfire, then get that injector checked again.

If you have not had the pump off, you will not have moved the timing but it might be worth a check, however, the popping in the exhaust indicates valves rather than timing.

thanks brian,
it was a little backfire now and then.i did all the vavle clearances again.also there was no oil in the injection pump.
i topped the oil up and started the tractor it made a instant improvement no white smoke just black, now im just gradually adjusting the injector timming to get it right.it is running a lot smoother now.thanks for your help.meusy351(brian)

You must line the timing up to the marks or you may do major damage by running her with the timing out. You do not say what tractor you have but I thinking Super Major as none of the others have oil in the injection pump.

The timing mark on this pump is on a pointer over the coupling, remove the cover under the right hand channel at the back of the sump, turn her to 23 degrees on the flywheel and check if the marks on the coupling line up.

Note: The marks only line up once every two turns of the engine, if the coupling clamp bolt is below the auxiliary drive shaft they should line up.
