This is a big question. The hanbrake on the E1A works by clamping a series of moving discs against fixed plates which are effectively keyed onto an extension to the reverse idler gear .This gear is always rotating even when not in reverse. The handbrake works by the handbrake lever moving a cam inside the gearbox which presses against a powerful spring which forces the rotating plates against the fixed plates with the the handbrake lever being held in place by the pawl and ratchet mechanism .

The usual problem is that the tractor gets driven with the handbrake on either because the operator forgets to take it off or because it gets stuck on. This is what happended to my Major ( not when I was driving it !!) The forces involved are great because the engine is trying to turn the reverse idler and the handbrake is trying to stop it turning. In my case it was enough to snap off the two steel pins which hold the handbrake assembly in place inside the gearbox.

The only way to carry our a repair is to split the tractor and to removde the gearbox but you might be able to carry out some investigation work by removing the plate on the other side of the gearbox which holds the clutch operating lever and the PTO lever. With this off you can just about see and reach across to the other side of the gearbox to view what happens when you operate the handbrake lever.

As my Major was stuck in a field with the remains of the handbrake jamming the gearbox I was able to go in through that plate and do some "keyhole"surgery to remove the remains of the handbrake and the reverse idler gear and free up the gearbox. I was then able to engage first gear and get the tractor back to its garage.

There wil be lots of posts on the forum re handbrakes just carry out a search and they will be highlighted for you.

Good Luck

Laurie
