Post by nevilley »

Hi, no doubt this query of mine has been discussed before but being new to this forum i have to ask the following.. on my fordson super major i need to renew the disc brakes ,can anyone give me a idea where my first starting point is....and any hints on how to make the job easy ...another thing is i need to replace the steering wheel and after purchasing a new one my attempt of taking the old steering wheel off was impossible, i used a 3 leg puller but didnt budge..any hints on this as well would be appreciated....

If you type 'Disk Brake' into the advanced search panel at the top of this page, on the right, you'll find quite a lot of info posted about them.
I suspect you will also have to apply 'impact' to your puller.
Unscrew the column nut -- but only until it's just below the top of the inner column. Place a metal pad [aluminium ?] across the top and tension the puller up. Clout the puller with a hammer. Re-tension the puller and hit it again. It's brutal, but usually works. Any slight damage to the column thread will be repaired when finally unscrewing the nut. Might also be an idea to flush with penetrating oil beforehand as well.

Re the steering wheel, two magic ingredients - WD40 and ..... time! Keep reapplying the WD40 and let it soak

Thanks for the replies and helpfull info,,,, will try them all out to remove the steering wheel.. i wont be putting the same on on, i am replacing it with a new one.... the grinder idea looks promising.....my steering wheel has worn thin around the rim so time to invest in a newy...i would say the one on it would be the original hence being hard to get off...

They can be really difficult to get off. Joking aside, if you're not intending to reuse the original wheel, then the grinder is a good option. Replacement steering wheels vary in quality, so I have been told. If you manage to find a good quality one, I'd be grateful to know where you got it from.

I bought my steering wheel from a machinery place here is West Australia for $66.00 plus GST of 10%..$76.00..was from the compant called Bare Co who i believe dont sell direct to the public...not that i know the difference but this steering wheel is a really good one, nice and sturdy and plenty of grip....i also hear Bare Co prices to the retailer are the same no matter where, just depends on what the retailers mark up price is..
