'59 Power Major Electrical

Post by curtsat15 »

Ok, so after disassembling the electrics on my PM, I have discovered the problem. Going by the wiring schematics, and what was in front of me, I realized that my Uncle that had owned it previously had NO CLUE as to what he was doing. When he acquired the Major, he tossed the original 12v genny and wired a AC Delco 10Si directly in it's place. Little did he know that this was a self regulating unit, WAY too powerful for the original 11 amp system. Hence the voltage regulator and most of the primary wiring was fried. As I don't have the original genny anymore, and don't want to pay the $300 bill for one, I am going to use the alternator, as I have it on the tractor already, and have now figured out the wiring for it. PHEW!! Frustrating how a little knowledge can be so dangerous.

Ouch!!! If he knew enough to "discard" the regulator and hook it direct, it would have saved a lot of work. Dandy Dave!

Absolutely Dave! The main part of the harness is about 80% cooked. In process of replacing wires now. Hoping solenoid and light/key switch are still good. They look solid and intact, so lets hope eh?
