Need a project!

Post by AdrianNPMajor »

My tractor doesn't look like this anymore but part of me wishes it did! I need a project and would love to rip a Major apart again. Does anyone else have this feeling? :eyes:

I sure there are plenty out there worthy of your attention! But it's hard to make any money out of doing up old tractors. Definitely for love not money

Hi Ben

You're so right about the money side of things. I paid £850 for my tractor. If I don't cost my time, I might get back the total outlay now she's fully operational, but not if I costed my time. But as you say, it's done for the love. Some of my friends pay a lot more on a hobby that seems to be all about retrieving a little dimpled white ball out of a gorse bush! At least I can look back at a ploughed field and pat the old girl who's now fighting fit again.

I hate to say it but I suspect there is more to be made restoring red ones :eyes:

35's & 135's seem to go for better money, never sure why. Perhaps it's just the colour! :scratchhead:

Drove a MF 35 as a student but wasn't into mechanic then, so have no real memories of its performance. If I'm allowed to ask in this forum (!), are the red tractors as bullet-proof (make that bomb-proof) as a Major?

Hi Adrian
At the high risk of getting a lump of lead fired at me in the fordson forum talking about red paint  . I would say that from my experience both tractors have weathered there ages well :) . I have worked on both and it don't matter what it is a guy beats the snot out of, It will break motors and transmissions and wear out/ fall apart at high hours or low hours with no maintanence. A major transmission is good for 1200 hp In tractor pulling applications, but not sure a Ferguson 35 rear would take that much If you wanted to compare to that extreme :!:. I would guess 150 hp Perkins turbo diesel would probably push the Fergie pretty hard and to the point of no return :| . Ive seen them on youtube with crazy car motors in but don't know how long it would last on a pull or with a plough on the back :eyes: .
Regards Robert

dont know a lot about fergs but surly the 35 is equiv to dexta power wise and it would be the
165 that would be nearer to fordson major lb/lb .

Yes, prob MF65 would be the direct comparison. But I think the Major out sold the 65 several times over - it was never that popular.
