Major nuts and bolts

Post by Tracy »

Restauration of my major was going like a charm, but last week i managed to break a couple of bolts of the clutch plate. I noticed that they can't be replaced by standard metric bolts, but what type of bolts do i need, or can i use instead? BSW, BSF, BSC, UNC or UNF? And does anyone know a good webshop where to buy those?

Metric was not used in any of the Major and Dexta range, in fact it was not used by Ford until the 1980's. All bolts and nuts are either UNC or UNF.

Good Day

I find the parts list very helpful in identifying the correct fastener for most parts on the tractor, if a previous owner has used something else. I don't know which clutch you have (Live, or single plate 13", or whatever), but as an example, the bolts for the Live clutch cover are Part No115639-ES. Go to the Standard Parts Listing at the back of the book and it says they are 5/16"x 18 (UNC) x 1and 5/8" long, hex head bolt - special. As it says "Special", best to get the correct ones, as suggested by Henk, rather than any old 5/16"UNC bolt. There are a small number of other thread types, such as BA, BSF, BSP and Whitworth threads used on the tractor, but UNC and UNF predominate.

Hi Tim,

is this part list for a Super Major available as PDF and in english? I have one in french, but translating is a problem sometimes. A german version would be ok, too. :-)

Dear Peter

Sadly, I do not know, perhaps a moderator/expert on this forum will know. I managed to buy the parts list (in English) from an autojumble about 10 years ago and have found it to be invaluable.
