dashboard and tachometer

Post by mathias1 »

Since my super has a replacement engine, I'm not able to see any information about rpm, temperature on the engine, etc...

First thing is to get the tacho working. I'm missing the cable between the counter and the engine. Can anyone point me out to which cable I need? If I turn the tacho by hand, the needle moves a bit. It needs a bit of cleaning and the backplate needs to be fixed.

I did some more research:
Is it right that the super NP tacho cable was connected at the rear of simms pump?
I was at a show last weekend and found out that almost all major did have a angular piece connect on the timing gear.
I'm wondering if this would be the best solution to get mine working again. All I need is a new connection piece, cable and probably a new tacho.

You need another injection pump.

Early Supers up to July 1962 had an angle drive from the oil pump which you may not be able to fit to yours as you have a different auxiliary drive shaft that drives the pump.

Your engine is ex-truck with the vacuum brake drive and housing on the back of your pump and the pump mounted fuel lift pump. Supers from July 1962 were fitted with the Minimec pump which had the rev counter drive from the pump cam shaft.

thanks for the advice Brian.

Let say if I find a spare minimec pump, is it just to bolt on and start the engine? Or does it need some adjustments?

this is how the drive shaft looks like. Image
on the outside it looks the same.
I need to drain the oil to see what's inside.

May not be of any importance Matthias but just noticed that your tacho reads anti-clockwise (which may be normal for the Super) My 1958 Major takes the drive from the right angle drive unit in front of the pump coupling and reads clockwise - depending on the engine yours now has fitted, just keep this in mind in case it also needs a clockwise tacho.

Best of luck with getting the bits, I take it your tacho is fitted in the 'scuttle' under the steering wheel ? if so it will need a relatively longer drive cable than the one fitted lower RH side of the fuel tank.

Hope that makes sense and helps some - if you have a non standard engine you may need to create a new recipe for the parts needed :eyes:

You can see how the cable is attached to the back of the pump here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fordson-Super ... Swc1FXcNT9
