As some of ye may know through my various posts ,I've totally rebuilt to the best of my abilities my FMD. I've worked my major at hay making, silage , and more recently when my old Leyland 255 decided to call it a day, the fordson was called In for yard scraping , The stock are back in the fields and I've bought an old barn find topper.
My issue at the moment is my 1959 totally rebuilt engine has started to blow black oil out the exhaust, would I be correct in assuming that it's a valve seal ??. If it is a valve seal how would I know which one . Ehaust or inlet ? And is it a easy job to do once I've the tappet shaft off ?

Leave the engine alone, what it needs is hard work as soon as possible otherwise you will be overhauling it again shortly.
The rings will not bed in doing light work and all diesels need to be thrashed kindly or they will blow oil out of the exhaust.
As soon as Dextas were put on the beet hoe and drill here we got call outs every day to blowing oil out of the exhaust problems. a few hours on a plough or similar soon sorted them out. It has been the same story with every diesel engine I have worked with.
I got a brand new engine for my Sierra when the local Ford dealer had to take one out of a customers car under warranty for a similar problem. I put it in my Sierra and the first run was 250 miles with the trailer on the back to pick up a potato lifter. The smoke and coke that came out of the exhaust for the first few miles was rather spectacular. After that the engine did 250,000 miles with no problems.
