Front wheels
Front wheels
Hi
Just about to remove front wheels to recondition. Do I just support and undo the large nut or is the nut just a housing? Thanks.

Re: Front wheels
So it might be a hub cap then a nut with cotter pin? But does the cap unscrew or pop off? I can’t move it at the moment.
Re: Front wheels
Hi,
I assume you mean the cast iron wheels? The big nut is just a cap.
Couple of gentle ticks with a wooden hammer round the edge and a reasonable wrench should do. It is normal right hand thread.
Inside castellated nut and clamp bolt and cotter pin.

Re: Front wheels
Don't jack it up too high, they are seriously heavy and will drop on the spindle thread and damage it when you take the wheel off if its too far off the floor

Re: Front wheels
Keep the bearing inners and outers as sets, don’t mix.
Re: Front wheels
Here's a couple of pics of a wheel off, without the bearings. There are hub cap spanners, but they're very rare and expensive. Loosen the clamp bolt before you loosen the main nut, and don't mix up the bearings. Be very careful handling the wheels as they're very heavy (over 100 lb each, giving excellent front end weight).

Re: Front wheels
Thanks, have got them off. I was worried about using too much brute force on the caps. Cleaned them, painted wheel but need new tyres and tubes, my tyres are different sizes but seem to be 6.00 19s? does that sound right?

Yep, thats the ones

Re: Front wheels
All done, but boy they were heavy....

Re: Front wheels
Kept the front wheels on when mending punctures, saved my back.
Re: Front wheels
We did too when we sorted Billy's RH wheel ages ago, and seing how long it took (we had about ten attempts because of not using tyre levers and rubber glue) it was just as well we didn't remove the wheel. The bearing adjustment is just fine, so that was also great that the wheel stayed on.
