Hi Sandy, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The mechanic told me that the part was from the governor weight. But I have absolutely no idea which part in that area was damaged because I didn’t find anything wrong with the original parts. Working on the tractor feels like a never-ending story—I’ve had a problem with the brake on the left wheel for quite some time now, where the left wheel locks up immediately when braking, but once I release the pedal, the tractor keeps going normally. I’ll have to take it apart soon, and I’ll also have to remove the cylinder head because I’m getting an emulsion under the rocket cover, and I can see a little oil leaking out from the side near the exhaust. Well, I’ve got plenty of fun ahead of me, but the further I get with the tractor repair, the better I feel. Aleš

There's no Wright governor here, a bit odd but if it's all now ok then maybe someone dropped it in by mistake, we'll probably never know. I would check the head torque first, but I suspect that won't work. Try it anyway, you're always in time to change the gasket. Make sure you get E1ADDN-6051E and don't forget seal E1ADKN-6053. As for the brake, these brakes are designed to lock up easily, so you'll just need to be careful. If it were to stay jammed on then work would be needed but if it comes off ok then just leave it for now.

Thanks for the reply, Sandy. It was a translation error—it should have said "governor weight." As for the brakes, I'll have to fix that as soon as possible because as soon as I touch the brakes, the wheel stops dead in its tracks and starts skidding. I've tried adjusting the pedal and the screws under the brake cover, but nothing works. I already have the cylinder head gasket; I think it’s the right one according to the parts catalog, and I believe it’s about 1 mm thick or something like that. I’d like to measure the engine compression this year to see how the engine is actually doing.

I have the E1ADKN-6053 gasket too, and just to be safe, I also bought some new cylinder head bolts.

Sounds good. There are several 1 mm head gaskets, currently only E1ADDN-6051C (copper) and E1ADDN-6051E (composition, smaller bore) are available, there were E1ADKN-6051 and E1ADKN-6051B for Mk1 engines (both copper), and for engines 1425097-1518654 E1ADDN-6051B (steel) and for service E1ADDN-6051D (composition), these last two are thin, and require lower pistons E1ADDN-6110E. I wouldn't bother about a compression test, Ford never mention one in order to establish if it's ok or not. If it starts well and doesn't blow oil out the breather and maybe the dipstick I would leave it. Make sure the bolts are correct, otherwise just clean up the old ones, they will fit correctly. As for the brakes, are they adjusted correctly? If not then try that first, you might get better results backing off the LH one a bit, if you still don't like it have a look inside but I doubt you'll find much wrong, these brakes are designed to lock on for use as steering brakes. A bit surprised at that being off a weight, I would have expected it from somewhere else. Might be worth replacing the weights if one is damaged.

I tried adjusting the brakes in various ways, but it didn't help. I'll have to take the left brake apart, because the way the brakes are working right now is really bad. I'll also check the flatness of the cylinder heads, because you never know what the tractor has been through in the past; I want to get started on this as soon as possible.

Sounds good, remember the brake linings are probably asbestos. Make sure you check the balls and tracks in the actuators and assemble them dry. If you do remove the head I would skim it, it's a good thing to do especially if there have been leaks.
