Thanks so much for the opinion and advice, well-heeded. The tractor ran (drove it off the flatbed and around the yard when we first bought it) and everything worked, but then we had to use ether. When I have a car come in that needs it and doesn't smoke like a chimney, it was usually glow-plugs. This has power and doesn't blow a ton of blue smoke, even looks pretty clean at idle in the garage, so I think it's sound, basically. The oil pressure (with a direct mechanical gauge) is pretty consistent at 30psi with old VERY low viscosity oil. Should be that or better now that we've done an oil change.
I'll check the vac lines for the gov (funny, Mercedes uses manifold pressure to adjust the fuel at altitude, very similar to the vac feedback on these I would think).
Also..., uhh...., WHAT idle screws? Yep, need to find some and adjust them. Little by little.
It was cheap, so I can't complain too much.

I guess cheap majors are the same up here in Canada
I'm well used to all the fun you are having with yours and also seem to find there are a lot of things done buy guys that have no clue in the past Figuring out there mess can be hard to some days. The super im working on now is like that . Guys have snapped some of the clutch studs off in the flywheel and tried drilling them, the flywheel is now stuffed because they messed the job up. They ran it with broken push rods to and messed a piston and the bearings with un burnt fuel in the piston and fuel washing down in the oil and diluting it. The list is kinda endless
I usually run the tractors here on a mower or drive then round and pull levers and stuff for a week or 2. even then you can get a surprise leak 2 weeks after painting.
Just keep at her and you will get there in the end
, I guess when you get the second one you'll have learned a lot
yes these fordsons are addictive so I am sure there will be more I have 10 here now

Thanks for the commiseration, no need to apologies on the dog comment. It's what it is, at least in my book anyway.
Worked the engine enough to get the oil hot to change and the oil filter has me worried. I have a new one, but there's no way for it to "seal" in the screw-in housing?
I think it's missing some parts. Should be a spring or something in the bottom to seal it so the incoming isn't contaminating the "filtered" oil, but stuffing a new filter into this housing and screwing it on will be useless for filtration. Have any pics of an oil filter assy around?

Yes you have some parts missing
its a spring and a fancy washer with a groove in it for a ring that should be in the filter kit. Sorry I dont have any pictures as all my complete ones are together

i have a pile of the filter housings with the guts missing like yours and need the parts for my tractors too

If you are lucky the same style of parts might be in the fuel filter housing to get a patern or an idea what to make . there are 2 types of filter housing so don't know what you have. my last one had a 5/8 ish bolt head on top to hold the cannister and the guts in the fuel filter fitted so i stole them from a busted one on the shelf, one I tried had a different size hole in the middle and it would not fit.
you could also try getting on the New Holland tractor parts web pages i think the filter housings are on it with diagrams and part numbers you might be lucky and the parts are still available too.

I checked out the parts, of course not stocked, so I machined my own seal holder, used a $0.69 spring from the local hardware, then an O-ring to seal any seepage around shaft and a washer to back that O-ring up in the groove I machined in the seal holder. Works like a charm and probably seals better than stock.

Yeah those parts pages are very use full some days to look up parts and where they fit, or what you lost when something goes twang across the shop floor on disassembling like happened to me with a white tractor fuel filter the other day

Running issues:
Trying to deal with the hard-start issues and non-running until it gets really warm on starting fluid.
Timing is worthless. Nothing on the pump drive that is a timing mark, so lining up the flywheel marks then looking at the pump, the marker doesn't correspond with anything on the drive. It ends up near the middle of the drive plates, nothing there, no mark, no line, nothing. I made a paint mark where it came on the drive, then tried timing it advanced, then retarded, nothing made any difference in starting or running really. The coupling definitely moved when I adjusted it though.
Anyone have other ideas? Low compression? The oil stays clean for a long time, so not sure about blowby (usual for a worn motor), but oil comes out the exhaust and it acts like it has little compression. Valves were adjusted. All were far out, but perfect now and when it's running it purrs.

With the HX of the last two owners having to use starting fluid to start this beast no matter what the weather, it's probably just so worn I have no choice but to do a rebuild on her. Anyone have parts house suggestions for prices on liners, pistons, gaskets, etc.??

Those parts look similar to what I need for my Dexta fuel filter.

That looks like the fuel filter housing to me? My fuel filter looks like that, but the oil filter housing mounts directly to the block with the oil in/out through a gasket to the block.

Sure the mounting to the block is different, but I was wondering if the innards, ie the seal at the bottom of the filter which you skillfully repaired on your oil filter, would also work on my fuel filter? All I have at present is a spring & a washer.
Perhaps I should also investigate my oil filter..... to see what's missing there....

Oh, OK. IIRC, my fuel filter has a LOT of different things in it, including a felt seal washer at the bottom. I'll take it apart and photo'g for you next day or so.
