Wyomiles, the mud is clearing.
From your post I understand you have a + to earth [ground] system and will retain this.
Firstly, you have a generator, not an alternator.
Try re-polarising it -- even if it does not require it, doing so will not cause any harm.
The jenny has 2 wires -- the thin one is the F [field] wire, colour RED/WHITE, and the larger, thicker, one the output to the battery.
Start the motor; remove the thin F wire and touch the jenny terminal you've just removed it from, 3 or 4 times. Each time you do so it will cause a small spark -- normal. Stop the motor and re-connect the F wire. Re-polarising complete.
EXCEPT!
With the ignition permanantly on, this circuit, the F field wire, is always on -- and it should not be -- which is the cause of a weakened/drained battery. Either sort the ign. switch out so that it can be turned off, or, after use, remove the F field wire from the jenny making sure it cannot contact anything else -- re-connecting before useing again.
May I suggest that you start downloading, and printing out, some of the technical info. contained in our Wiki website. It also contains a wiring diagramme with the colour codes of wires and where they go to.

OK Thanks again Pavel, I will give the repolirizing a try and try to find time to study the WIKI.

Also, Take the cover off of the regulator and be sure the points are not stuck together. Dandy Dave!

OK Dave that is easy for you to say, difficult for me to understand
Where is the regulator and how do I check the points ? Is that the small square box next to the battery and solinoid?
Maybe I shouldn't own one of these tractors as I am not much good at mechanicing. If you guys keep your patience with me I might learn some things though.

Yes, the little square box next to the solenoid. Sometimes these are faulty, or the plating on the points is getting warn away and the contacts will burn together. When this happens, it will drain the battery. More often than not, the regulator gives up before the generator. Dandy Dave!

Gotta persevere. Spend time researching the many posts on this site and you will become full bottle -- well almost.
You might like to have a look at the following website:
Type in -lucasfaultmanual - and the first site [at least on Yahoo] is www.vitessesteve.co.uk Click on that. It is a PDF doc [ex USA] covering electrical equipment fitted to Triumph cars and gives details about checking generators and regulators amongst many others. The regulators shown are a little more complicated than the Fordson, but give the general idea for testing and checking.

Re: Howdy from Wyomiles with Super Major
Thanks again you guys. I hope I can squeeze one more week of tractor work in before winter sets in. I will be back to our land the last week of October and hopefully I can try a few of the things you all have told me to try. Then it will be putting the fuel stabiliser in and taking the battery home so it won't freeze over the winter. The antifreeze is already in the cooling system. I have a large tarp that I cover the tractor with too. No buildings to store anything in yet. Anything else I should do to winterise her?

Re: Howdy from Wyomiles with Super Major
Hello all. It has been a while since I have been on here, been pretty busy. The tractor has done lots of work. I never did get the power steering kit hooked up. I need a welder to weld a different mounting bracket on it.
I have decided to sell it, if anyone here is interested, or knows someone who is.
My brother has given me his larger/newer backhoe and there is no sense in having two. I would love to have it go to someone like you all who would be able to do the restoration work that I have not been able to do. It is in South Central Wyoming now. I will have my nephew haul it out of the mountains when he drops off the newer backhoe and it will then be in Ogallala Nebraska. I would like to get what I have in it, about $6000.00 US. I will be putting it on Craigslist also and maybe in some local papers. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Sold ! A guy in Laramie Wyoming bought it. His son is a diesel mechanic so I think she will be in better hands and some of the work that she needs will get done. Thanks again to all of you for your advise and help. I was really impressed with the power of my fordson. A good old tractor.
