Multi-hypoid 80/90 and other oils

It's looking like engine and other oils with major distributors in my neck of the woods in France don't do a universal oil for engine, gearbox etc. (but I'll keep looking).

Rather, they offer 15w40 for engine and a multi-hypoid 80/90 for the rest.

I take it there's no problem for a '56 Major with this? Goodness knows what the last owner has been using for the past 30 years anyway.

Cheers

That will be no problem John. You could actually use the 15/40 right through without a problem.

Many thanks, Brian. That does in fact make life so much simpler. There's some good deals on bulk oil here.

Cheers. :D

Very cheap lube

The big local supermarket is offering their own brand 15w/40 (all temp and freely mixable) at €8,95 for 5 litres. That's half the price of the agri merchants. I read recently that modern oils are too good for old tractors. If that is the case would you use such a cheap oil throughout the tractor, bearing in mind next-to-no work and very little road mileage?

If it's a deal not to be missed, I want to be down there with my trailer and stocking up...

Cheers

I'm glad I didn't. Turns out it's synthetic - although the cans weren't marked. Actually I bought the last 10 litres before I found out.

So, would there be any harm in using cheap 15w/40 synthetic purely as a top-up? Or could it be put to other good use in respect of a tractor?
