Rear Axle Lubricant

RE: late model Fordson Major /// Helped my buddy today (91 y/o) to remove hay forks and install the bucket. I checked his engine oil and added 2 qts, checked the typical fill cap on the left side and the lubricant was nearly at the top. Next pulled the dipstick just behind the fill cap and there was NO lubricant present. Best I could figure without a manual, it would be filled at the fill cap just behind the seat. Am I correct in this assumption? Since it is so low as to not reach the dipstick it would be a great time to drain and flush (yes/no) and what are your recommendations to refill with and how many quarts/gallons? I just got to learn how to take pictures and enter them into this puter. I know how we all love to see what we are working on. It's a good ole tractor used only for stacking round bales and occasional light bucket work. Also makes a great skaffold when standing in the bucket (hung some tarps 18' up also)...
